I see what you're saying Eve. I will just have be extra careful when I move the net around so they don't get squished by the support structure.
I'm going to take my chances with my experimental box and see what happens. As long as I'm able to save a few fry, I will be happy. I'd be thrilled if I got 5 or 6, to be honest! I just want to have the experience of raising a fish through it's whole life cycle.

Steph, I've raised hundreds of platys that got their start in birthing boxes - I have never lost a one to being squished - the net deal may be a different issue with attacks from the other fish outside the net possible but for the few short hours they are going to be in there before being transferred to a new tank, I cannot foresee this being a problem - we all have different views and experiences, personally I have never lost a fry born in a box - good luck and keep us posted!

Ok, cool. Thanks John. I have some fake baby hide grass, so I took a piece of that and put it along one of the sides of the net that will be exposed to the other fish, so hopefully that will help protect them. I also cut a new piece of plastic canvas that fits in the net more snugly, so there aren't any gaps between plastic and net that Mom can get through.
I just hope I don't wait too long to put her in there, but I don't want to put her in too early...

good luck - mom will not be too active in there unless stressed - once she starts having them she will go into almost a trance - what kind of fish again please? be careful of sharp edeges - a little fish food in w/ her should help as well - at least she knows it's there even if she doesn't eat it

A platy. I made sure that the plastic canvas doesn't have any rough edges. I think it'll be fine. I also found a nice fake cabomba plant that will be a nice floating plant. Maybe that will make her feel better too.
