Hey guys, So I went to big als today and got some fishies. I got a new swordtail for nemo, he was looking pretty lost without Mcspiff, he's a black n white one. And then i got four Serpae? tetras, I think I spelled that right. I wanted a smaller fish so I could get more of them, and I asked and was told they didn't get much bigger than an inch, hope he was right cause i got them anyways tehe. If not I'll have a slightly overstocked tank and just hafta change water more frequently. I originally wanted ummm licorice gouramis, I looked them up today before I went and fell in love with the cute lil guys but they didn't have any so my next idea was some sort of tetra since they generally are all smaller right?? Anyways they are still in their bags, getting adjusted, I added some meth blue to their bags because two of the tiny baby tetras have some bad looking fins I noticed, I didn't get to pick them out at the store so I didn't notice til I got home. So hopefully its just from nipping and shipping. I'll get some pics once they are all adjusted OH and I got a new ornament for my 20 gal and replaced my old ship I had in there, it was getting old and gross nad the sails were breaking and stuff so it was time for a new look.

it doesn't look like fin rot really, at all...the ones who had bad fins are the two smallest, and i was reading up on them and it says they tend to be fin nippers mainly within their own group as they establish a pecking order, and seeing as the big ones look great I think they might have just been picked on.
OMG the two little ones, are like still fry looking, they just lil tiny tiny babies, like 1/2-3/4" max super cute

ok, that's good then just saying what i usually see at those fish stores anyway, if it's just nipping it should heal up with good water conditions which i'm sure you provide them with yes, it's amazing how small they're when you buy them just a few days ago, i looked at them at the store and couldn't believe how much mine had actually grown, it's amazing

PICTURES and NAMES This is Buttin ((yes with an I not button )) And these are my Serpae tetras: Their names are Rambo, Shrimpy, Ned and Ted. I named Rambo because hes a crazy bold fish, first thing in the tank he comes to see me and wiggles about then goes off to school with the other fish, first saying hello to the pork chops then he went to the swords...who are like 10 times his size and tried to swim around with them, just not even caring that he didn't fit in lol. And then at feeding he searched and found the biggest flake in the tank and took it and mo-owed it down and carried it around until he could finish eating it. Then shrimpy is the smallest one, and ned and ted are the other two.

Thanks for sharing the pictures Sam! So why Buttin with an "i"? The Serpae I assume is named Rambo looks good, the other two look weak, so keep an eye on them. Did you add Methylene Blue to the bags during the acclimation period? If you did not, and/or you have any medicated Wonder Shells left, adding one may be a good idea for them as well. Good luck with your new fishies Sam Carl

Yes they two smaller ones are very week, I'm a little ticked off right now about it actually because I came home to find shrimpy stuck to the filter....
He's still alive but hardly, he can't really swim or anything. So I dunno if he'll live...if not I am calling big als to see if they have a garuntee of some sort because I never got to watch him pick the fish and he gave me horribly unhealthy little guys, who were in bad shape.

Sorry to read this Sam.
I would call Big Als right away, regardless of whether they live or not, since they should not have sold you the two weaker fish in the first place.
Just my two cents.

I agree...but calling if they live really doesn't matter, it's a massive store they really won't care.

I agree...but calling if they live really doesn't matter, it's a massive store they really won't care. That is rather sad, regardless of store size. When someone called us to let us know a problem, such as a fish that was just purchased, we would note this so that the customer could have their fish replaced. Carl

yeah I know, its a city...who knows they might care but I highly doubt it, in general people in calgary generally don't care... wow that was bitter sounding lol.

thanks, they actually had quiet a few different selections for swords there, they had this guy and a female like him though, those were the only two of this coloration in some random tank and weren't even labeled. The had the orange n white ones as usual like nemo, and then they had ones like mcspiff i had and ones they called 'green' ones but werent really green...lol

I'm sorry to hear one got stuck to the filter. I hope Big Al's listens when you call them. I know most stores have a 14 day guarantee if if a fish dies, you can return it and get your money back.
I know this sometimes piss off petstore employees but why don't you look and the fish and tell them which ones you want to get. That way, you can pick the healthiest ones. In the time when I bought feeder goldfish before I reached full capacity, I always made employees net the feeders I wanted individually. Some of them were nice about it but some said they wouldn't do it because I was buying only 1-2 feeders at a time that were 12 cents each. If you can, make sure you select the fish they net. Good luck!
