ok thankyou. appreciate your advice. I have been dosing with stability daily for the past few days. I'll get into the fish store this week for the others. I was almost going to do a prime dose for the nitrites.

Prime is good too, but it is a very temporary fix The mineral Cations are also important for a fix that is already weak and suffering from high nitrite exposure. Carl

Carl I've been doing my weekly water changes and testing water can't seem to lower nitrites. I'm going to be adding a second hang on filter ( fluval c4 ) to try and get some more filtration and hopefully more bacteria can start developing. the bacteria is taking a while in my bigger tank. I have 7 fish all around 2-3 inches and my nitrite level is high and won't go down. ammonia and nitrate are all good and my phone level is optimal.

Nitrite generally follows ammonia, so once your ammonia is down, the nitrite should follow as per the Aquarium Nitrogen cycle article I provided earlier You might simply consider a good sponge filter. My tests with these have shown much higher bio capacity over comparably rated HOB filters. Even as for canister filters, I would suggest the Filstar over the Fluval or better yet, a FSB Filter combined with a less pricey canister filter. I also decided to add a fluval c4 I got used just to add some more media for bacteria. I'm getting a 65 gallon ready to start cycling it. should be better for the fish one that's up and running. that all being said. after a few water changes my nitrites are still way to high. I'm using an api master test kit. ammonia hasn't budged for weeks nitrates have fluctuated but my nitrites will not move. fish are lethargic but have good appetites. should I do a full clean up and start fresh ?

I am still concerned you are not getting correct readings. Try testing tap water I would even consider an inexpensive 5 in 1 Test strips Resource: www.americanaquariumproducts.com/Aquariumtestkit.html#5in1Eating well is positive. So until we are sure, a fresh re-start is something I would wait on as yet Carl

I'm gunna let that do its thing untill tomorrow when I change my water. I think my tank is just still cycling and just getting past the nitrite phase so my nitrates should be rising now. a couple of the fish look a little pale and ragged. not sure if from stress or sickness I saw what looked like a white poop floating around. I purchased general cure I will medicate if they don't have a positive change. now my ob is looking alot better. although she can't eat the spectrum. cichlid pellets it will scarf down blood worms. should I continue feeding blood worms untill it gains some of its sunken belly size back ? thanks for your help. ps I have test strips and have used them. and I did test clean tap water.

Your certainly going through a cycle, which doesn't help treatment.
You most likely are making it so the tank wont through a cycle again with the remover.
Something like SeaChem Stability would help the cycle process, since sponges take like 6 weeks to seed by them self. The medications will keep stopping the cycle also, since it wasn't strong to begin with.

I'm going to start cycling the new tank next week or so. will be doing a fishless cycle. how long do the ammonia and nitrite cycles typically last ? again thanks for the help gents.

It really varies :/ Depends on so many factors. Filtration, bioload, etc. From what I've measured using Stability it was a few days.

A Fishless cycle (such as with ammonia) can take some time, but variables make vary considerably. Please give this section of our Aquarium Nitrogen cycle article a read: www.americanaquariumproducts.com/Nitrogen_Cycle.html#fishlessCarl
