Here are some more pictures of our club fish auction. Our club does this 3 times a year. The money we make pays to get speakers to come in, buys books for our library and buys refreshments for our meetings. The division of the money paid for the bags of fish is a 70/30 split. The seller gets 70% and the club gets 30%. This is part of the crowd. Lots of cichlid lovers in Cleveland... This is the night before the auction. We had a pizza party to do the setting up. Talked a little fish talk too. This is a prospective bidder looking for his favorites and checking out the quality of the fish. The girl that is doing the auctioning has more than 100 tanks in her basement. She breeds, sells and ships fish all over the country. The guy looking at the camera is a catfish specialist. The guy with the microphone, is a super breeder of all kinds of cichlids. He is in the top 5 of the all time point leaders in the BAP (Breeder Awards Program) for the Ohio Cichlid Association (OCA). He also performs auctioneer duties at other club auctions around our area. Just another angle on the auctioneer and bags. The guys standing next to the auctioneers, holding the fish bags in most of the pix are called "runners." They show off the fish to get people bidding, run the bags (once they are sold) out to the buyers and collect the money. Hope you liked the pix. John

Thanks for sharing these, yes I enjoyed the pics! With the collective cichlid knowledge you gleen from this fish club, you could really provide some great articles about breeding and similar. If you are ever interested in posting some of this in our EA home page blog, let us know (I can give you the passsword access in a PM) Carl

That's super sharing John (8)! This shows the benefits of attending something like this, with visual assistance. To me, it's one thing to say or suggest something in writing but attending something like that, has a different effect when you experience it. Seeing it in action is a huge plus and you take great shots John (8). I wish there was something like this locally, however I think NJ has been called the Pleco Capital of the USA. I don't think there'll be much of Africans in the way here. One can always hope.
John (Murdock), is in Michigan, and if southern MI might be in the area to attend, that would be something nice! John (8), you mentioned the guy with the Mike is a major breeder. Does he sell off eBay or Aquabid? Is there any way to see what he does have or the lady with the 100 tanks? Do you know if they offer anything via the internet?

Great pics! You are very fortunate! My uncle would also probably like a fish club. He has a marine 75 gallon and is really into fish!

Wow you have a lot of people at yours. I went to one here in Portland, was about half of the people you had. But was still fun except I was the only one with goldfish I may go again, not sure about joining tho?

up here in northern Michigan it'll be rare to find......have to go on an adventure sometime I guess - hard to get away w/ the job AND the farm......wish Mi was the pleco capital! I love them and it's hard to find more than the common up here.....hard to find even a BN! will look into it this weekend when I go sell my fish at a new store!

John (M) John (8) breeds BN's so you just might be in luck!! Not sure how that venture is going though. I think John (8) posted on that though. Maybe in a short time if they get up to breeding again, I bet he might be able to supply that. Any word yet if you want to try a small group of the yellows or is that later on? Still have close to 20 of them here. Looks like a small number of them showing some very minor looking bars, but about half or so still showing pure yellow. You know, to be honest, I'm starting to wonder if this isn't related in some level, to them being in tank vs the lake.

John (Murdock), there are some people in the Detroit area that do a lot of selling around the country, their names are John and Betty Oyer. Here is their email: jeofish@aol.com You could probably even drive down there, they have a house full of fish. Close to a 1,000 gallons in their living room. Basement is where they keep the ones they sell. We do a club visit to them a couple times a year. He imports fish also. Linda's email is: Lmwfish2@aol.comThe guy's name with the microphone is Lou, his email is: lewcj@yahoo.comJohn

Wow! That sounds really cool. I'm closer to Detrot than Murdock. Only 30 or so miles. Maybe I could visit them sometime. I'll have to wait though until my mom can afford to drive that far, I'm under the impression that money is tighter than usual at my house...

Money is tighter than usual at everyone's house these days. That is the reason I just changed jobs. Now it is a mile and a half one way instead of 20 miles. Pay is better too... It is really a sight to see their livingroom. In one tank they have a giant gourami that is at least two and a half feet long. She fed it a banana out of her hand while we were there. It just engulfed it, one bite. They don't do goldfish, though. They are primarily cichlids and scavengers. John/8

What about bettas and guppies? I'd love to sell some of my guppies. THey're reproducing pretty well now. Don't want to end up with a hufge population like Murdock did with snails and platies. lol

Don't want to end up with a hufge population like Murdock did with snails and platies. lol Just put a betta into the tank with the guppies, you won't have an overpopulation problem. As I understand it, bettas just love guppy fry.... and it keeps the betta healthy too. I have a crowntail in with a group of mixed fancy guppys but he doesn't seem to be thinning the herd any. There are so many, maybe they are overwhelming him. Lots of Java moss though, so he has trouble getting down toward the bottom of the tank. John/8

But I love my guppies! I can easily fix that problem by putting the guppy fry in with the adults who go mad whenever anything food-like comes near. Plus my bettas seem to get fuzzy stuff growing in their tank all the time, have to constantly clean it out (don't ask me why). All of my guppys' tank have never had fuzz so far . Wouldn't want to change that.

The fuzzy stuff might be fungus growing on uneaten food. You may be overfeeding your bettas a little. Cut back on the amount of food you serve, clean out the fuzz and see if it stays away.

That's my problem (not with overfeeding though). They go nuts when I feed them on the top and eat everything in site but only on the top. Then 1 small pellet of food falls to the bottom and I get problems. It is really annoying. Luckily my guppies and goldfish don't do that. They'd eat the food I gave them even if it was rotten and they sercah everywhere for more long after it is gone! Thankfully, doing wtaer change sand cleaning out the betta conatiner with a rag weekly seems to be doing the trick. I've also been changing around foods to find a good one nthey can get to easily before it falls to teh bottom and they lose interest.
