i got my tank up and running after i cleaned it out the guy at the lfs said i have done OK as i cleaned everything and put fresh water in it (100%) change. i also put a bit of bog wood and also put in some tetra safe for the water is this OK as it is goldfish. also do you think i should maybe put a heater in it at a very low temp as the fish seem to be hibernating? there are 6 fish in it as the algae eater died in transport the tank is a 88ltr and has a filter in it cheers for any info you can give me ;D

The goldfish should not need a heater unless the temperature of the tank they are kept in will be varying by more than 5 F a day or more which in a 40 gallon tank (if I estimated the liters-gallons) is unlikely. Also, how cold is your tank? Anything above 65 F is really fine for goldfish. As goldfish are dirty fish, they should be kept with a good filter. I'm not sure if Tetra Safe and Bog wood lower or increase GH, KH, and PH but I know goldfish like their water with a PH a little over 7.0, say 7.3-7.6. Also, goldfish should have a GH of about 150-200 (my estimate) and a KH of about 120-180 (again good estimate though Carl will probably kow teh numbers better). Hope that helps!

Good luck with your tank friedegg! I agree with Renee's points. The Tetra Safe is fine product for use as a water conditioner. Bog wood can be safely used with goldfish, altough you should monitor GH & KH to make sure these do not fall too low with the Bog Wood present in a goldfish tank. Buffers (such as SeaChem) can aid in control of KH and Wonder Shells for GH. This article has some basice goldfish information: Gold Fish Basics, CareCarl

I have 4 rather large goldfish in a 55 gal tank. I really like Prime as it detoxes the ammonia and goldfish are full of that I tell you! I just put a heater in my Goldy tank as the water temp. was always changing, what a difference as in lots more movement. They seem happier too.
