I probably couldn't safely house that many Barb, but I could probably do anywhere from 30-40. I just lost my Dat!!! That was the only fish that would have posed any danger in that 75. There's just albino Protomelas Steveni, and Yellow labs in there. 2 Fullerboni that I could easily move. I basically have an open 75 I could put as many as you'd need to unload in. Not sure if 100 would work in a 75, but if you think that'll hold them till they get older, hey why not.

Yeah yeah laugh it up, just wait til you see the care package you get from me!
Jon, I need to BAP for my club, then I promised a friend who owns a pet store local some. I'm sure I'll still have a bunch after that. My area seems to have a lot of them lately, so I'm going to have available fulu.

I plan to donate some from the next batches to the Lake Victoria Project. That's what I hope to do with a lot of my Victorian fry. Also, donate to other cichlid clubs, let them get their breeding going.
I may need to downsize my colony of these tho. I have at least 6 females, and 2 males, but that leaves 5 fish I'm unsure of.

I'll take whatever you can't accommodate Barb. Plenty of room with little threat left now.
Brenda, I don't really know what happend. They just told me they found him dead. What I will say is the common theme here is they all came out of the 75 after I had to clean that sucker out. Ammonia was like 4 and the male Venustus that was in there, made it about a day and half and only the Protomelas Steveni Albino male is left, and he's in pretty rough shape. All three of those fish however, common denominator here, larger sized males. All the smaller ones seem to be ok and have adjusted to the messed up chemistry that happend.

OK an update...has been kinda weird.
My Neochromis Omnicaerulues fry all died. I have no idea why, except half of the batch was deformed, and they died off one by one.
My dom male Mbipia cf. Lutea died. No clue why...except aggression. I have another male coloring up. The fry from my first batch...I only have 4 left. The second spawn, all seem deformed, but the mom is maybe an inch tops. There seems to be 10+. I'm not going to keep that many deformed fry, but I will see if a quick growth spurt solves this.
I decided to catch all my holding female Xmas fulu...would you believe 6??? I thought there were 3, and was checking, and found 3 more. 2 are being difficult, but I caught 4. There is a possibility of having 100+ fry. I'm going to give a group to my club for the LVP (Lake Victoria Project) for the next auction. I'm thinking of donating 1 male and 3 females. I should still have a great group after that.

OK...I pulled 4 holding female fulus last night. One spit more than 10 fry, 3 still holding. One female that I had isolated ate her fry, cause I never saw any. Walt pulled 3 more holding females today. So right now my count on fulus is 40+ babies...probably 50 or more, and still have 6 females holding.

Pulled another 10+ fry from the females Walt moved today. I'm trying to combine the small fry into one tank. I have other fish I'd like to have room for, when they start to hold.

Wow! That's a lot of babies. That's about as many guppy fry as I have right now. You must be a really good fishkeeper to be breeding that many successfully.
Just wondering but where are you keeping them?

I don't know about being a good fish keeper...but they are breeding like crazy.
I keep the group in a 55 gallon species tank. There are 13 in the group, at least 8 females and I'm sure of 2 males. The females that are holding are in 10 gallon isolation tanks (I have 17 set up, but I don't know if I have enough!), the fry are in 10 gallon tanks, and the moms that have released are recovering in a 20 L. I plan to keep the new mothers separated for a little while, to gain some strength back, and to prohibit any more breeding right now. In May, Greg Steeves is going to take some of these fry to a few clubs around the country. I'm glad to be able to send them out, and get this fish more into the hobby.

How much do these guys breed? I hope not as readily as guppies. lol
Are they the endangered ones you mentioned earlier?

Well, they can breed like that...but I'm not going to let them. The females are going into a female only tank for a while, until I can deal with more babies. I never expected this type of breeding all at once.
These fish keep changing designation on the Red list. They are listed as Near threatened now, used to be critically endangered. That's good for the fish!

This may be a dumb question, but how do you get a mouthbrooding mommy fish to give up her fry? Does she just decide to do it on her own, on her own time schedule?
It's great that you're having such success with breeding a fish that obviously needs preserving. This may be another dumb question, are they endangered in the wild?
