Dear all, My crowntail probably injured himself. I really dont think it is water quality issue-- I test weekly, and always get 0-0.25ammonia, 0 nitrite, 7.5 nitrate, gh 8 , kh 3, ph 7.4 ( actually the only one time it looks like 0.25 was a couple day after vacumming half the tank. Did I disturb the bacteria colony in the gravel??) a couple days ago I notice one of the ray of his tail was broken. So the pointy end of his tail was hanging off that broken part. Because only one ray and one spike was affected, I believe he probably got it from just being feisty and zipping around through the plants / his little tunnel. I just added aquarium salt and gave him more almond leaf tea. I dont notice white fluff , redness or black edges. Should I just let him heal on his own? He is in an established tank so any treatment that wont involve medicating the tank would be ideal. I am thinking of using bettamax bath but not sure if that is needed or recommended at this point thanks! Love everybody. Will come see you in Grant Pass if I ever come back to Oregon.

Carl,
Could using stressguard on a daily basis and res-Q at water change affect my beneficial bacteria?
I am not too certain what is going on. Another tip on his dorsal fin start to rot ( the tip turn into this mushy ball rather than a sharp pointy firm tip). I wonder if it has to do with me vacumming half the tank and changing water 50% or not. I will be testing his water one more time tonight and maybe not be so heavy handed with cleaning.
Since the rot is still pretty mild I am leaning towards doing baths if needed ( dont want to screw his cycle over by treating in tank)'
I am even wondering if I can mix any medicine with food.
Not too keen on removing him from his tank as I dont want to stress him out unnecessarily.
Still gun shy about swabbing. This fish has the longest pelvic fin and crowntails seem oretty delicate. If he thrashes around too hard it could do more harm than good.
What do you think?
Thanks!

AAP Res-Q is a product I've used literally 1000s of times as the main water conditioner for many clients and it has never impacted the bio filter. Reference: www.americanaquariumproducts.com/Aquatronics.html#resqStressGuard is not at all medicinal and should also not have an effect Carl
