I set up a new 75 gallon aquarium after moving to a new home in July, 2018 and added six superveil koi angelfish that were purchased through an online vendor. I started the aquarium with an active sponge filter purchased from the angelfish vendor and I also run an FX4 canister filter. There are ramshorn snails, live plants, elephant skin rocks, and manzanita driftwood in the tank, but no other fish besides the angelfish.
Water parameters for the 75 gallon tank are:
PH 7.2
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 20
Temperature 75 degrees
143.2 ppm GH (with Wonder Shells)
35.8 ppm KH (with Wonder Shells)
I change ~40% of the water once a week and treat with Seachem Prime, Easy Green liquid fertilizer, Seachem Flourish tabs about every three months, and AAP Wonder Shells (large size). Before trying AAP Omnivore food, I fed the fish a variety of flake foods purchased from the fish vendor, feeding a small amount (consumed in about 30 seconds) once a day.
One of the fish, Angelfish A, started floating at the top of the tank in October, 2018. I moved him to a hospital tank and withheld food for a week. He recovered and I moved him to a new 45 gallon tank with a new active sponge filter in case his issues were from an injury caused by one of the other five angelfish. He was fine until February, 2019, when the swimming problems reoccured and he died. Around this time, I also noticed that another fish, Angelfish B, was lethargic and hiding in the 75 gallon tank. I contacted the vendor who sold/bred them, and he suggested trying an antibiotic.
I purchased Kanamycin Sulfate flakes, but before feeding them, I added half of a large AAP Wonder Shell and tried feeding the AAP Omnivore food. The fish improved some with these changes, so I waited on the antibiotic. A week or two after I introduced the AAP Omnivore food, I fed all the fish in the morning, and came back about an hour later to one of the healthy fish, Angelfish C, suddenly dead. I don't know what caused the sudden death; I haven't seen any aggression among any of the angelfish, and this fish in particular had been active and robust. I stopped feeding the AAP food in case the death was somehow related.
Within the past couple weeks, Angelfish B has been almost always hiding/resting in the plants and sometimes floating at the top of the tank, so I started feeding him the Kanamycin Sulfate flakes. I fed the flakes exclusively for 10 days, and his ability to swim has gotten worse. He is now mostly floating on his side at the top of the tank, though he will sometimes swim to the front if I stand in front of the aquarium. I haven't seen any visible injuries or issues with any of the fish, and I've never noticed aggression or attempts at breeding. The three other angelfish (two of them are now in the 45 gallon) appear healthy and normal, but I don't know what to do at this point to help Angelfish B and prevent the same issues occurring to the others.
