I am not new to aquariums, but I am fairly new to ADFs. We have bought a total of 7 frogs from 2 different sources and they have all died. We would really like to keep these wonderful creatures, but we want to make sure we are not doing something wrong to cause deaths. What is a reputable place to buy ADFs? We have tried our local fish store as well as Petsmart. The local fish store is actually about 90 miles away because we live in a rural area. Also, what medications are safe for these frogs that we should have on hand? Do you use medications in your initial quarantine?
The first 2 frogs were bought at Petsmart because they are close by. Those frogs lived less than a month. After a couple of weeks they started hiding more, had tattered skin, and died. We fed frozen brine shrimp and they ate well until the last few days.
Since there was the possibility of spreading disease, we started a brand new tank with brand new substrate, plants, rocks, etc. From the local fish store I originally bought 2 frogs; they both died within 2 weeks. I then bought 3 more from the same store. One died within a week and the other 2 died within 2 weeks.
I cannot figure out why they are dying. My water parameters are good, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and 5-20 nitrates at all times, usually 5-10. My pH is usually around 7. I do weekly water changes of about 25% to vacuum the detritus off the bottom of the tank. The tank is 10 gallons and I had the frogs and a Sunset Gourami in the tank. I have a sandy substrate and the tank is planted with java moss, water sprite, anubius, and java fern. There are also rocks and a piece of driftwood bought from my local fish store. I keep the temperature around 76 degrees and use sponge filtration.
I fed these frogs Fluval Bug Bites (what the LFS was feeding them) and occasionally frozen blood worms or frozen brine shrimp.
The frogs seemed to act fairly normal for a couple of days and then I saw the tattered shedding skin. They continued to act pretty normally other than maybe hiding a little, but not all the time. They would eat very well all the way up until the day they die. The day they died they would start hanging around the top of the tank, spread eagle. Do you have any ideas what might be happening? I don't want to buy more frogs if something here in the water is causing their deaths.
We have a total of 5 aquariums here with over 60 water animals (mostly fish). We do not have issues with deaths or illness with any of the other animals, so we are really baffled. We don't know if there is something we are doing wrong or if the frogs are not in good health when they come to us. Any help you can provide would be appreciated.
