I've updated the AQUARIUM DISEASE PREVENTION; Steps to a Healthy Aquarium & Sick Fish article
Here is an excerpt:
Here are a Medications/ Treatments that SHOULD be kept on hand BEFORE you need them in an Emergency along a link for a product resource and with some information about each:
*AAP Spectrogram (Pharmaceutical Kanamycin/Nitrofurazone Combination);
This is the PREMIUM treatment for Columnaris and many other common aquarium fish problems. This is superior to separate Kanamycin/Nitrofurazone as besides being pharmaceutical grade, it is combined in a way that allows for full synergistic use of both meds unlike treating each separately when one requires different treatment schedules from the other.
In lieu of Spectrogram purchasing each separately is your second choice (albeit less effective, especially in high pH aquariums):
* Kanaplex (Kanamycin);
A very effective gram negative antibiotic, which can be combined with Nitrofurazone or Metronidazole. It MUST be combined with Nitrofurazone for and effective Columnaris treatment.
* Nitrofurazone (AAP Furan Two);
Excellent for lower ph applications for gram negative and some gram positive infections.
*Metronidazole;
A unique internal and external anti parasite treatment that also has anti-bacterial properties (especially internal bacterial issues of the gut).
*Triple Sulfa or AAP Betamax (Contains; Sulfas: methazine, diazine, and merazine, as well as Nitrofurazone, Methylene Blue, PVP, Vitamins, NaCl);
Great for collapsed or torn fins as well a strongly recommended back up to Ich Treatments such as AAP Super Ich Plus for common secondary infections. Good treatments for many causes of Septicemia (also incorrectly called Red Pest).
Bettamax in particular is excellent as both a preventative and moderate strength treatment for fisn infections of long finned fish such as Bettas or Guppies
Also an excellent standby if others such as Kanamycin or Tetracycline fail
