I'm having a very difficult time trying to get a diagnosis for my loaches and would really appreciate any advice, I will try to back track from the beginning.
May 31st, my order of 10 black kuhli loaches came into my LPS. I went in June 1st and one had a red ulcer on it's belly and another wasn't moving so I decided not to get them. Apparently after that, only 1 other loach died that was put into the system. I had set up a 6 gallon sterilite quarantine and made sure the filter media I took from my established tank would be able to process the ammonia, which took 2 weeks. I have pool filter sand, some catappa leaves, a terra cotta pot, box filter and heater in it.
I went back July 10th, 5 weeks 5 days later, and picked up 5 of them. The loaches looked active as well as the Apistogramma in the tank, absolutely nothing on any of them (I inspected them for about 30 mins, don't judge!). I drip acclimated for 1 hr and I was doing 35% water changes every other day. Everyone was active and eating. Tuesday (July 17th) night I was in the middle of a water change and noticed a kuhli loach laying out in the open with something dark next to his gill.
I took a flashlight and noticed: labored breathing, tiny piece missing from 1 pectoral fin, bad red ulcer on belly (almost like a clean slice), protruding bloody tissue from an open wound directly above where pectoral fin meets the body, red scrape next to eye, along with very few scattered clear fluffy patches mostly on sides of the body and covering the caudal fin (for some reason I could only see them with a flashlight, not even when fish was out of water). About an hour after noticing this, the fish was having seizures and died 15 minutes later. I immediately took him out.
The other 4 seem unaffected as of right now (inspected them with a flashlight and nothing out of the ordinary). I live in quite a rural area and yesterday I was able to pick up Kanaplex and Seachem StressGuard but cannot find Furan-2, or anything similar. I really don't have a lot of money to spare on medications at this time either. I dosed StressGuard and Kanaplex yesterday.
My parameters are 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, ~5 nitrate, ph ~7. I think my water is relatively hard (or so i've been told, have never tested it). I originally had the heater set to 79F but of course we have been having a heat wave with no breaks (except for night time) which puts the outside temp at 30-35C/86-95F. I have multiple people telling me it's columnaris but as I read the symptoms (from article on this website) and pictures, it doesn't add up. I had originally thought it looked like Aeromonas but of course I don't know.
As of right now, my plan is StressGuard daily, 50% water change every 48hrs with new dose of Kanaplex. Please help.
