I recently found one neon with a white formation on its tail, and I thought it was fungus. I set up a hospital tank, and treated with API fungus cure, and Maracyn II. Here are the pics, after the full course of treatment. Evidently nothing much has changed. In short, I suspect this may be something else than what I thought. Suggestions will be appreciated. The fish is swimming normally, and eating as well, but I want to see this healed before I re-introduce him into the main tank. Presently, I am mostly filtering out the meds out of the hospital tank, and wondering what the next move should be. As a general question, I am wondering what the best general group of meds is to have around now that all my tanks have inverts: shrimp, snails, fw clams, and a variety of other inverts... not all meds seem to give clear information about that issue. It seems most Maracyn meds do not affect inverts. There were some snails in the hospital tank with my neon, and they seem to have survived the treatment just fine.

Maracyn 2 generally is not effective for this type of infection. It is not clear from the picture if it is fungus/saprolegnia or bacteria. Fungus ina close up with look more like dandelion "poofs". I would consider a medicated bath using Methylene Blue, Furan 2 & Kanaplex. More information: www.aquarium-pond-answers.com/2009/07/fish-baths.htmlSince the fish does not seem to sick otherwise, you might even forgo in tank treatment for now, or a more mild treatment such as Triple Sulfa or Maracyn Plus. A more serious treatment would consist of Furan 2 & Kanaplex in the tank as well I have a list of medications I recommend keeping on hand in a section of my "Aquarium Disease Prevention" article: www.americanaquariumproducts.com/Aquarium_Disease.html#onhandtreatmentsMany of these are are "snail safe" Carl
