Hello,
I have a question about the Wonder Shells (not medicated).
So I have a 5 gallon tank and I have been putting in 1/8 of the shell as to not shock my betta.
How long is the shell suppose to last?
It seems like 1/8 of the shell only lasts about 2-3 days.
Does that sound right?
Thanks!

It depends on a couple things. How soft the water is and the flow around the shell. You could say... add an 1/8 of the shell let it dissolve, wait a few days and another 1/8th, wait to dissolve wait a few more days, water change... add and so one. Best is just to get into a balance based on parameters and how the shell is used.

Hi Devon
Ok, my water is hard PH 8.2 GH 13 KH 11
I do place the shell where there is the least amount of water flow.
Thanks for the info. I honestly did not think they would dissolve so fast.

Pretty hard water. What's it out of the tap?

I'm confused how it could be harder from the tap. Usually is the other way around... consider your adding minerals. There's acids in the betta spa conditioners that bettas enjoy. You may consider that.

So adding the wonder shells is not a good idea then since my water is already hard?
Also, I have only been adding 1/8 of the wonder shell so would it make the water that much harder than the tap?
I do have betta spa which I have not used yet but can.
I also have started to add indian almond leaves
thanks

Depends partly upon the fish kept how much additional mineral Cations. A small fragment will not affect your GH much. In your case as Devon noted, it shows it went down which is not usually the case unless either the readings are incorrect or the minerals are being used. I would still recommend using this fragment based on your readings as well Either one and/or Pillow Moss which will have more of an impact on KH & pH Reference: www.americanaquariumproducts.com/FrogMoss.htmlCarl

Right, I can't understand how it went down for the tank reading...
none the less, you still want to use a shell, because... the shell will release a charge the tank need for the fish's health. It really has nothing to do with the mineral (GH) reading, but that is one of the only ways to try and measure the charge, unless you have a fancy meter. So, you could have hard water, but it doesn't mean to have the electrical charge. The minerals are present, but could have lost there electrical charge.
So, you still want to dose them to know you have charged minerals...

Thank you Carl & Devon!
I plan to do another water test here in the next day or so! Just in case my test was wrong but it always seems the tap comes out harder than the tank. I keep a spreadsheet of all my water tests.
Thanks again!
Also, something i have noticed when i have started to add the wonder shell is that the glass of my aquarium builds up with this white film.

city water? If so, let the water gas out for an hour before your test from the tap...
White film on the glass? I think I need to see that. It's on the glass or in the water? Does it go away with a water change?
Can you provide your Ammonia, Nitrite, and Nitrate readings too. Type of filtration... (very sorry if you provided this before)

Also, something i have noticed when i have started to add the wonder shell is that the glass of my aquarium builds up with this white film. This is the opposite of normal with one exception. The exception is when one uses softened water, it will cause the calcium to precipitate out causing this or similar issues. Which is why I'm wondering if it's a cycle or bacterial issue.
