Hi.
Initial information - I have a couple of Lionheads in 30 Gal, with two filters (over the wall Penguin and SunSun UV sterilizer), all water parameters checked and are good. I feed them intermittently with Sanyu Goldfish & Koi food and Aqueon Goldfish Granules (I soak all food before feeding). Sometimes I give them spinach or a very thin slice (transparent) of blanched zucchini.
One of the fish started losing balance, eventually swimming on its side. The appetite is still good. I had the same problem a couple of months ago, I gave them a blanched frozen pea and starved them for a couple of days. Everything fixed.
But now the same thing again and pea and starving do not help. The fish is lying on the bottom, I'm pretty sure if I start feeding them, he will activate, but otherwise he's more comfortable lying down. Amazing how another Lionhead is all the time next to his friend, even stopped swimming around, and seem to be tying to comfort him.
Two months ago the sick one had some bloating on one side of his belly, may be some gas inside from bad digestion, and this was unbalancing him. Everything passed after some starving, as I said. This time I don't see any particular swelling. Overall, from outside the fish looks healthy to me.
I'm thinking of Epsom Salt bath. I read the article about baths and dips www.aquarium-pond-answers.com/2009/07/fish-baths.html
but I do not see exact amount of Epsom Salt that can be put in a bath.
Or may be some other suggestions? May be it's a girl and she can't lay eggs?
PS. I didn't buy new fish recently, for over a year these two guys were sole inhabitants (I only added snails and plants from time to time), so I hope it's not some kind of serious disease.
PPS. I just found in another topic about a betta: "Epsom Salts can also be used too at 1/4 teaspoon per gallon in baths used for treatment, especially in cases of bloat, water retention, selling, etc. This salt should be pre-dissolved prior to introduction of fish to prevent burning of gills."
Is this dosage suitable for stand alone Epsom Salt bath or it's a lower dose for using together with other medication?
