Young, indexed veija maculicauda (black belt cichlid) 7" This fish has been in my care for approx two months. I bought two from The Wet Spot in Portland. Days after bringing them home they presented with what was diagnosed (by myself and confirmed by Carl and Devon) lymphosistis. They were together in qt but separated due to aggressive behavior. No treatment except a few dips in MB water for the lymph. Smaller Black belt has had no more problems. The fish that is sick has confirmed nematode infection (callamanus or? small red worms) and is being treated with MB & Epsom salt baths, prazipro in tank, metroplex in tank, malachite green at half dose in tank and table salt at a low dose in tank. Yesterday is when the lymph showed again. The fin rot is strange - looks like fringes on fabric.

The last picture I saw did not currently present lymphosystis, rather I saw nodules and severe fin rot (Please post here too so that other members might be able to help). This is typical of a very weak fish that is going down hill fast, sometimes from within. Have you seen worms or other symptoms of worms? With the fin rot, you might be better with Furan 2 combined with Kanaplex or Triple Sulfa over the Prazipro & metronidazole Carl

I do have worms I collected from fecal remains, photos posted in Freshwater Fishues. Both fish has these same nodules, and I had posted it when I first noticed. Columnaris was suggested as a possible cause as well. :-(

Well, I never thought I would mislabel detritus worms! I ,several times weekly, tell people about these worms, the role they play, what to do/ not to do etc. Ok, so now to get the fish into new water again. I am thinking just clean, unmedicated water to begin with, or should treatment for columnaris begin?

Well, I never thought I would mislabel detritus worms! I ,several times weekly, tell people about these worms, the role they play, what to do/ not to do etc. I understand What are the current parameters for this cichlid (kH, gH, pH, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates)? Making sure water parameters (such as with your water change) are very important with this guy, as he really looks like he is very weak and it is quite likely that the bacterial pathogens are simply opportunistic. A Furn 2/ Kanaplex combination may be called for, but an all out "everything but the kitchen sink" type treatment that includes these before mentioned treatments along with a Medicated Wonder Shell here is a picture from your FB page as to why I am concerned: Carl

So...i am guilty of not having either a kh or gh test kit. Ammonia 0 Nitrites 0 Nitrates 5ish Ph 7.8
I've been doing daily water changes on the half full 20 gallon, today removing the meds I was using previously.
I have human grade meds mentioned above- going to have to do some math before dosing. Thank you for your help!

All we are trying to do is a get a quick snap shot of approximate water parameters Resource: www.americanaquariumproducts.com/Aquariumtestkit.html#5in1Great & you're welcome! good luck! Carl

What treatments have you started? Can you get an extreme closeup picture of these nodules growing on his side? Here is a pic from your FB page: Carl
