I did what I could, but I'm going to ride it out until it warms up and then I'll remove the died plant matter. That's what I ended up deciding to do as well.

What... is the water cold? Cold enough to make sure I'm waterproof from the waist down.

Even that doesn't help completely. ROFL

yup... seems like the algae will thrive in cold water. All makes sense as plants "evolved" from algae, as algae was/is able to survive and thrive in not so optimal conditions.

I'm in the process of doing a massive water change. I don't know what else to do. We've been in the SEVENTIES the last few days. I tried running the UV by itself (without the entire biofilter setup) and it made zero difference.
I'm getting frustrated that the unpredictability of the weather here simply precludes having an outdoor ornamental pond. It's enough work as it is but when we go from 20 to 60 to 20 again in a matter of a couple of weeks, there's no way to keep everything balanced.

I drained my pond down half way to just the holding tank. String algae is booming...

I just finished doing a 75% water change in mine. Visibility went from zero to about 12" so it's an improvement. I'm not sure how I can keep things going without going to my summer setup - as soon as I started messing with things (cleaning the filters, etc.) the fish started begging for food. They're as active right now as they are at any other time of the year!

Could we use Excel to kill the algae?

They sell it by the gallon... might be a little more affordable.

I dosed my pond the other day with Excel and the string algae started to turn supper light green and has already started dying off and settling on the bottom of the pond. It is letting go of the walls.

Back out at the pond I maintain. All dead matter has green string algae. Water is very clear, but dead matter is covered in green! I removed a lot but also left a lot on the under water died plant matter to give the fish more places to bunker down in. I plan on removing it all next visit.
Glad the Excel worked!

My water is clear too. I have a abundance of string algae that was getting into the pump. My surface plants keep the string algae at bay but this spring I need to deep clean the pond from hidden debris.

After treated my pond with Prime about a week ago and 80% of the string Algae is now dead. I have been scoping it out of the pond today. I will use prime from now on in the pond.

Richard Do you mean the SeaChem Excel? BTW, you might try our locally made NilocG Enhance. Same product, includes pump, and a great supporter of professional sellers (unlike SeaChem of late) Resource: www.americanaquariumproducts.com/BulkSeaSaltFerts.html#enhanceCarl
