When I began to set up my 29G in my apartment, I decided ATO was a must have. And, I must admit, I don't regret that decision. Whenever it fills up, I replenish it at my leisure, before the next run, however, I do find myself not running in full auto mode, which is a pity, but I find that I cannot trust the automatic controller (Hydor) and I suspect it is because my copious duckweed interferes with it, so besides evaporation, I usually run the thing after draining some water for a water change, and then once it refills, I take my time to refill the ATO tank.
What happened on a few occasions in full auto mode is that it filled up to the programmed line, but then a few hours later, it starts running again and then it runs until the tank nearly overflows. The probe is usually buried under duckweed. so I don't think it's a malfunction, but, better safe than sorry I leave it switched off in between water changes.
