My koi have gotten ridiculously large and destructive. My pond lilies, which used to cover 90% of the surface of the pond, are all dead. I've had to move my hyacinths and water lettuce to a 40G stock tank to protect them from being munched. I'm not sure what to do at this point because it doesn't matter what kind of plant I float, they destroy it.

Are they eating the lilies? One thought is a roll of chicken wire with the Lily in the middle There are artificial pond lilies which provide shade, I used to sell these. Here is a current seller: www.pondbiz.com/maintenance-free-plants-artificialI could possibly still order these too: Carl

Sorry to necro such an old post but I'm still struggling with this. The wind up here destroyed my attempt at using faux lily pads. They don't stay in the pond.
I tried to use the nuclear option with hyacinths this year. Instead of trying to buy 5-10 and watching them struggle to survive all summer, I bought a lot of 50. I thought maybe that would overwhelm the fish and let the hyacinths get some breathing room to grow.
Of course, I was wrong. They're not growing. Despite having 50, they're just barely hanging on. Any new growth is promptly destroyed by the fish.
I'm really stumped at what to do next. I'm not fighting algae, the water is really clear, but it's also really warm because it's getting way too much sun.

Have you tried the wire around these plants?
As for the "faux lily pads", maybe some fishing line tied to a a rock at the bottom?

I had some with fishing line - I need to find some way to reinforce the lily pads. They're made out of foam and the fish generate enough force when they hit the lines that they just tear right through the pads.
I haven't had much luck at all protecting natural plants. The fish destroy pretty much everything I come up with.

With the chicken wire idea, the wire is rolled and weighted with rocks at the bottom. The lilies float at the top of this chicken wire "cylinder". I got this idea from my dad who used this on land to protect trees/shrubs from deer
