Hi-- I'm wondering what could have caused the appearance of snails in my goldfish tank? Should this be of concern?
I've noticed them for a couple months now. I think they may have come along due to some anacharis I put in the tank a few months ago; though I rinsed the plant off very well prior.

I would guess that you are correct as per the Anacharis. Even with rinsing it is very easy for small snails or eggs to get by. As well most anacharis is raised in ponds that are loaded with snails. One natural method to control snails is to place cucumber slices on the bottom of the aquarium, then when covered with snails (often in the morning), throw the slice and snails away (note, this does not get rid of all snails, only control the population). Yup, a natural part of aquarium keeping esp when plants are involved. There's ways to sterilize plants to not bring them into the tank, but it usually doesn't work that well without causing harm to the plant. Just manage them.

Snails like to move up to the water edge so I reach in and just smash them. Their numbers are dwindling pretty quick now. You also need to look for jelly clusters on plants and the glass around the water surface because this is snail eggs that need to be removed. This is how I have been dealing with the snails that came with plants I ordered online.

My snails came with a very small, allegedly clean sample of plant. I trusted the source, so I didn't give it a Potassium Permanganate bath (15 minutes in very pink water).
I now have many snails, but not as many as at Peak Snail. Over time, they will limit their numbers to the food available, and their numbers can be decreased by physically removing or smashing them. Copper will also work if you happen to have a fungus you need to be rid of, but there are bad side effects to that as well.
Best you can do is control them and be happy that your glass cleaning isn't as tedious as it once was.

So there is no way to get rid of them completely? I actually put a goldfish in my tank thinking they would eat them??? ( Hmm where did I hear that from) any way I guess I will try the cucumber slices now.

I had thousands of those pesky pond snails. I bought 6 assassin snails to keep the population down. When the assasin's bred, the juveniles went to town on the pond snails. They completely wiped them out. After those pond snails are gone, you can feed the assassins carnivore pellets. Mine love shrimp pellets.

I only really get a crazy amount when something is out of balance in the tank. It will be the same time I get algae... When the tank is thriving, there's very little snails to worry about.

Ok so I put the cucumber slice in the tank...... but it's floating. Should I put a weight on it to sink it or will the snails get to it anyway?

So the cucumber slices was a big wash out!!!! The other fish ate them, nothing left but the rind. I don't think snails had a chance to crawl on to it. 🙄 So now what? Any other suggestions.

Did you put it in the tank late at night when you go to bed? In the morning take it out. This is what I did and the slice was about 3/4 to 1 inch thick. Richard
