How should you place your media in a canister filter? I'm about to clean my canister and switch it around. I currently have... 1-floss 2-Purigen, floss, grill bricks grill bricks3-Matrix 4-Floss, medium pads, course pads What I'm thinking of switching to is 1-Bricks, purigen, ceramic rings 2-Matrix 3-Floss 4-Floss, medium pads, course pads

My 704B filters from the bottom up, or I think anyway. Would that cause the Matrix to clog?

ah, got it, thanks. I'll do your suggestion and see what I get.
The "floss" I use is the polyester fill from Walmart. Ok, or no?
Would Bioballs work in the bottom of the filter under the bottom tray?

Seachem suggests using a buffer after soaking Purigen. Could you use baking soda or epsom salt instead?

Baking Soda can work, but Epsom Salt is not a buffer Often though I have not found it necessary to use buffers. Troy gave a great method for re-charging Purigen, similar to what I have done (but I think his method is better), but it did not include bufers either unless I missed it everythingaquatic.proboards.com/thread/4064/purgien-recharging-ammonia-spike?page=2Carl

Thanks for the help. I guess I'll skip the buffer.

While not a cheap alternative I use Matala Mat left over from my Koi Filter days. I have a couple Eheim 2217's that I cut round circles out to fit the filter. I usually separate the colored pads with lava rock. No complaints on performance...just another way around the block.I like to horse around with different variations.
