Good point Bill and I did mention that to him to window shop around for various species that caught his eye. While I was looking over for Rams I scanned over the other Apisto's out there and found quite a few that has some visual appeal.

thanks Brenda - have been on the phone for a while trying to find some apostigrammas (dwarf SA cichlids) no one has them or carries them - am very gunshy about ordering them from anywhere - losing 5 out of 6 at $8 a pop sucks! so does paying high shipping when they only last a week, so for now I'm gonna be happy w/ what I have cuz I can't afford anything right now! have some beautiful labs fron Jon and my gorgeous SA tank will have to be what it is til I can find something else to liven it up a bit - the one blue I have is gorgeous! maybe some day I'll get lucky.....in the meantime, I'm going to enjoy what I have

Ah John just look over the bids out there too. Sure I always pay a little extra on shipping but if you REALLY want to have your choice of getting a cichild, one is almost forced to turn to the internet or you'd have to know some good private breeders which I bet 8 does. Here, there's a couple guys that have them but mostly SA's and not exactly local but enough that I could drive to them to offset any shipping. You really should just look over the species to see if anything catches your eye. Don't worry about the rest.

Another fish that is a SA variety that I have kept with Ram Cichlids is the Festivum Cichlid (although they might be best in a slightly larger tank): Also you might consider the slightly larger than the German Ram Cichlid; The Bolivian Ram (Which I currently have one in a smaller tank than yours). I'm late (as usual, lol), but I just wanted to add that I'm really bummed for you too John! I have read in magazine articles that German Rams can be tricky to get past the first few weeks.
I looked up the article from TFH. Here's a quote: "One of the most common complaints about newly purchased rams is their penchant for keeling over and dying in the first few days." I know you've had yours longer than a few days, but it's a good thing to ponder. The article also mentions that there has been a lot of line breeding to enhance their colors and such, so there are some pretty weak strains out there. Perhaps you were just unlucky enough to get some of these...

I read the same article a while back while pondering getting them in the 1st place - took a chance.....general concensus is they were like you said inbred and weak or possible ammonia poisoning from the tank they were in - beautiful but fragile little creatures - will try again when the time is right and $$$ permits - thanks for your thoughts and sharing

I plan on giving them a shot too at some point. First I would have to replace the substrate and get some smaller grain stuff, so it'll be a long time before I feel like doing all that!
