OK, Howdy all!
Got a question which many will know... But I don't know
Have a few tanks with angels ( I mainly raise Discus, Notice I said "raise" and not breed (we all have limitations)), and they are persistant egg layers! Every 7 - 10 days they are at it again. Well, I wanted to try and get some fry so after many attempts by them in an RO/non-RO mix of tank water I have come to the conclusion that the fungus in the water is always going to beat them down. So, I tried opulling the slate one day after a breeding session and put the slate in a 20 High with small amount of circulation and metheline Blue hoping that this mix would grow. Well the eggs did last longer, and I even had a few starting to wiggle ( so I know that at least the male was hitting them correcly and that the RO-to-Non-RO water mix is good as far as harness goes ). But... they still ended up getting attacked by fungus and ended up being overtaken.
So... I do have a few TMC UV's that I configured with the recommended pumps to get the proper dewl time that was recommended buy the papers posted here at AAP. The UV's are on my Discus tanks with FSB's to make sure they live in the best quality water possible. Since I can not get the Discus to breed I have no way of knowing if the UV could possibly be the solution to water fungus for my angel tanks.
All that being said, I can't find any specific information on AAP that talks to controlling water fungus, or even if I am feeding wrong or not doing enough water changes etc... I am considering a build for a BOG ( AKA veggie bog ) that I could pump angel tank water through and back to the angel tank. I wanted to know if anyone thinks this will work... or if I should get another UV and and that would do it. Or ( and this is very expensive and wasteful ) setting a big 100 gallon trough with the proper mix of RO/non-RO water and having it consitantly doing a water change on the angel tanks (drip method with overflow for removing as it adds water).
The Discus I gave up on.... but the Angel fish breeding should be do-able... I am just missing something here!
ANY advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Bill
