hey guys i noticed in the beginning of my planted tank experiment my plants were doing prefty good with 6 discus and about 10 plants. the only thing i dosed every day was excell. i have been noticing over the last couple of weeks my nitrate level is 0. plant growth is soso except with the hornwort and java fern which is doing great. i have been feeding fish extra to try to raise it naturally but with no sucess. my question is how do i increase nitrates beofre i run into an algae problem like BCA? will a plant fert do? parameters is 4 kh and 10 gh with a 7.6 - 7.8 ph

Anti.
Arnt you using NPX? Is there too much? Concentrated Ferts would increase Nitrate. I know SeaChem wont really up them. I do have a more concentrated brand which does.
But doesn't this just work against your NPX?

So low nitrates are not an issue with hornwort Carl

i didnt employ NPX on the big tank. funny thing is during the cycling the nitrates were off the charts. once the cycle was complete nitrates were gone. thats when i saw the most plant growth. what kind of concentrated fert u talking about? i dont want to create an imbalance but i might be on my way to one though.

i didnt use NPX on this setup. i had all kinds of nitrates during cycling. plants used them all up. who would have thought i would be tring to find a way to put them back in. what kind of ferts are you proposing devon?

I would recommend either SeaChem Nitrogen or I know of a people to creates their own, which are more concentrated. Takes SeaChem about 5x to increase the same amount these ferts do.
This is one way, you could just up your bio-load.
I can get you in contact with the ferts guy if you need.

Simply increasing bio load with more fish and/or feeding will increase nitrogen production. Carl

well i do have 4 new discus in a quareteen tank. i suppose another week or two wont hurt till i get them in. if that wont do the trick then ill consider seachem nitrogen

This tank have sponges? Maybe dont clean as often as well. The sponge will store Nitrates.

yeah i am ahead of you on that. i will probably skip a WC this week if the levels look good. probably just dose a wondershell. everything looks good though. no major complains. i did loose my last ram a couple of days ago. parameters were fine. i think it was just his time to go. i heard they dont last for some reason. had him close to a year

I agree with Carl. Adding more fish is the best course of action.
