Just dug up my rubbermaid bin of fish supplies from the crawl space to start my new 55g tank. It feels like Christmas! 20 years ago I bought an Eheim 2217 canister filter with the intention of buying a big tank and I am just now putting it to use! I will list the supplies that I found in the bin (and were recommended to me at the time by the store employee for a 130g tank). My question is...which of these items should I use/not use and how? What media would you recommend for the Eheim filter? What other filtration (sponge/UV sterilizer/etc.) would you recommend for this tank? Is the Eheim too big for this tank...should I get a different filter and save the Eheim for a big African Cichlid tank later?
From purchase in 1997: Eheim Canister filter 2217, 1000 l/hr 2 round white floss about 2" thick 2 boxes Fluval A-1470 ceramic pre-filter 2 Aqua Clear 201 power heads 2 Visi-Therm 200W submersible heaters
Other supplies: 2 (2L) Aqua-Pure loose activated carbon 1 20oz API Ammo-Carb 1 box Fluval A-1386 Aqua Clear carbon bags (3 pack) 1 Penn-Plax Airtech 2k4 airi pump 1 Elite 799 air pump 2 Coralife 2" wood air stones 2 blue air stones 1"
Planning to have rainbow shark, barbs and danios in this tank and would like to simulate the river current natural to the habitat of the fish. Look out for another thread to ask about other possibilities for tank mates for the rainbow shark:)
Thanks for any and all help!

Thanks, guys! Any good leads on where to purchase these things on-line? Also, I was thinking I should do a sponge filter in addition to the Eheim for redundancy and besides, they are great filters! Is this a bad idea/overkill? If not, what size should I get?
Carl - I have read many of your articles on the AAP website. Sooo helpful - thank you for all of the time and effort you have put into making this information available to hobbyists like me. Due to my general lack of experience (and the abundance of experience you and others on this forum have) I do not trust my judgement in deciding what to do with the information on your website and thus asked for opinions to help me. There are so many combinations and choices!
Devon - Yes, the shark is alone with a snail (recently added to help with algae). We tried to put some tetras in there with him/her, but they did not survive. The tank is just too small....thus the upgrade to a 55g:) I do not plan to add any more sharks to the new setup.

Yup, all these things can be purchased through AAP. The shark is good for keeping things clean, he's just quick and like to chase. Make sure whatever you add is equal or larger in size or he may go for them.
