When I came home, from 3 months vacation, I discovered one of my smaller tanks was infested with snails. I am darn sure that the snails got into the tank on a bunch of fw floating plants I'd put in that tank before I left. The aquarium service I utilized while away was unable to remove the snails - snails are a challenging pest - in my opinion. The plant was labeled "snail free" - it should have said free snails! i opted to purchase a couple Assassin Snails to take care of the snail problem. Assassin snails are carnivores, predators who feed on other species of snails. Within 60-seconds of introducing these Assassins to the tank, one was already feasting. While it will take about 2-4 months for the invasive snails to all be eaten, I know the Assassins were the right choice for the job. Assassin Snails are black/brown with orange/cream strips and a max shell size of 3-inches. They do well in all freshwater and pond conditions. The Wonder Shells that I routinely use in all my tanks will help the Assassin's health and well-being as minerals are required for strong shells. When the tank is "snail free" the Assassins will continue to thrive with carnivore fish foods including worms and fd mullosks. Unlike other snails, the Assassins are either male or female - not both! Breeding is much slower than other snails because of this. And their eggs are square! (As you may know, other snails are both male and female in one - so when they mate they both lay fertile eggs! This is why they invade so quickly.)

I have a lot of snails, but I don't feel like they are overwhelming. I do think they have something to do with bio-load in the tank. I just let them be and also let some of my fish feed on them. I also know someone with a pufferfish who loves snails, so I get a bunch and feed them to brokenaquarium (Til's) puffer. What you shared is very interesting. If I ever feel like there's a problem, I'll remember these guys.

Yes Til's pufferfish would enjoy the crunchy morsels I'm sure. I can picture him/her jumping up and down the side of his/her tank as you walk in the door holding a bag of pond snail "treats" for him/her! Very funny.

Assassin snails are awesome. everythingaquatic.proboards.com/post/26369Bill, All I can say is get a couple assassin snails. My problem with the common snail are pretty well-documented here. We were trapping and removing 50-100 out of the 14G tank EVERY DAY. We put in 4 assassin snails and in a month or so, all of the pond snails were gone. EDIT: The assassin snails actually look cool too.
