Greetings Carl/All,
As I wrote several days ago, I am going to be writing reviews for several products that are also available from AAP. My reviews will emphasize the benefits and will include something like, do an internet search for - benefits of Algone - and you will see why this is a product I am never without. Carl, please post your links here for others in the forum to see....I won't be able to post your links, but will reread what you have written on the product.
I use the small pouch in my smaller aquariums - two 20 gallon, both ten gallon -- and even my 2 gallon Betta tank (although the one in the Betta tank has been in a very long time -- needs to be changed). I use the large pouch for my 75 gallon. These work well in my AquClear filters as there is easy access to take them out -- rinse if needed and put back in. I just replace them every two weeks. Algone is particularly helpful if an aquarium is overstocked.
Algone does reduce ammonia and nitrates - I do not depend on Algone to totally remove nitrates). When I was trying to get the cycle going again in my hospital tank, I had an Algone in both Aqua-Clear filters as well as a small pouch of Nitra-Zorbe (the Nitra-Zorb were recharged). Algone does help keep Nitrates below 50 ppm (a level my fish tolerate).
What is particular good about Algone is that it CAN be left if the filter during medications. Algone will not remove any treatments. Algone helped me save my fish when the local water supply poisoned them.
One of the most humorous complaints about Algone is that when folks have tried it, the pouch smells. Well.... that shows them how much the product was needed. The pouch can be rinsed and returned to the filter. These generally will work for about a week (I just service my filters every two weeks -- and just leave the pouch in there). Do not leave the pouch in for longer than two weeks or you may wonder "Who Died?". Sometime around Thanksgiving, I could smell what I though was a death as I entered the upstairs fish room... I opened each tank and smelled the water -- no fish death. Well.... the last time I serviced all of the filters, I did not service the new AquaClear 50 that is on the 20 gallon. That Algone was in that filter for maybe 4 weeks. Stink-O!! I did have to laugh at myself. I save empty food containers and small product containers to put the used pouches in -- then the go out in the trash.
Cheers,
Judy
