Greetings All,
Today I "went fishing" in Dayton OH -- and it turned out to be a rescue mission. An associate at one store told me they had some new 8-Line Red tail rainbows. Well.... that associate must be a new hire.... as the new rainbows in the tank were ordinary Australians. They did still have the three older females I saw a while back when I purchased two neon dwarf rainbows). All of the rainbows were getting harassed/bullied by two LARGE Tiger Botias (see note below)! The tiger botias were about 6" long. I told them (the associates) to get those monsters away from the rainbow fish. The two larger females were quite haggard looking (one was covered with bacteria and the other had a white trail of poo - so something internal going on). There was also a male millennium that had torn fins and part of his tail missing (so sad.... I have no room for him)-- and many of the Australian were missing their tails. I "rescued" the smallest female 8 line red tail red tail (and that is the last time I make a trip to that store..... Different manager than when I bought rainbows before. I still have two rainbows that came from that store in 2012 -- gorgeous fish! The two Boesemani that died recently were from that store -- they had the best color of any I had every seen).
My next stop was to buy a male Boesemani rainbow (another store in the chain - just north of Dayton)....These poor boys were in a tank with lots of lobsters! Those can be evil. The lobsters must have seen me coming as they all scurried into hiding, but I know what they can do when no one is looking.
Two of the male Boesemani had Ich and torn fins. The one I rescued is missing part of his tale - but did not have Ich.... and I am pretty sure he will not get Ich. The good news.... The manager gave me this Boesemani for FREE (totally unexpected). Long story, but the one I bought a few weeks ago couldn't go back since it was in my aquarium that had the worms... Not fair to the store/chain, so I kept him (he wasn't doing well at first, but seems OK now - and is eating. I haven't seen what his poo is like though. It was white a couple days after I brought him home).
I was going to give both new boys a Methylene Blue bath when I got home.... but it was too close to dinner and hubby was hungry (me too!). I gradually brought their pH down closer to mine (their pH was very high today -- had to around 8.0 - off the chart for my test kit) -- and raised the pH in the quarantine tank to 7.5. I did put Bio Bandage on the Boesemani's tail, but will hold off doing more for a couple of days (really stressed him out!).... He is afraid of me now (grin). He hides when he sees me coming -- but when I am out of view he is swimming around the the aquarium. His respiration is back to normal.
Both of these rainbows will remain in the quarantine tank for several weeks - then will move to the 20 gallon for a while. Once the Boesemani grows a bit, he will move to the 75 gallon. The 8-Line Red-tail will stay in the 20 gallon. I sort of made room for them in the 10 gallon by moving the full grown Yo-Yo loach to the 20 gallon high. I was going to move a couple of the tetras to the 20 Xtra High, but decided it would be easier to just add an extra water change for the short time they will be in there.
Note about Tiger Botias: I saw one that was just stunning at a pet store in Findlay last spring.... He was only 2" long. Stupid me - I bought it. Once I put him in the 20 gallon, I knew right away I was taking him back. He terrorized ALL of my fish including my 2 full grown Burmese Border Botias. I called the store and asked them to hold one Striata Botia for me. I even exchanged it the next Sunday (didn't matter to me that I paid a $1.00 more for the Tiger botia). That tiger botia ate all of the tails on my veil tail cherry barbs -- and all of the high fins off my hi-fin cory cats. My fish all recovered after the beast was gone.
Just have a chuckle....I was at the store a few weeks ago....and they still have that monster tiger botia. Normally, I research a fish thoroughly before I buy any....That one just caught me eye. I actually wanted at least two Yo-Yo loaches, but the others were just so tiny that I only bought the one....The following week - when I returned the tiger botia - I did buy two of the tiny YoYos.... They are "teenagers" now - about 2 inches long. I had to get rid of an African Frog before I could get tiny loaches.... I gave the frog to the Sidney store during the week prior to buying the tiny loaches.
