Greetings All,
I did my son's water changes Thursday (postponed from the week before). I knew some of the fish needed Methylene Blue baths, so I took my bottle with me. I set the bath bucket up in their laundry room (with floor covered). This is the first time in a very long time that I netted a large fish. Boy, those large Severums sure put up a fight - water splashed everywhere. Do you have any tips on netting large fish? I will be doing another water change in two weeks (we went too long this last time and water quality declined).
My son's girlfriend now knows what to do to keep the KH and pH up. Next time, I am taking a Wonder Shell (I forgot to add it to my supply bin this time). The fish are healing from bad cases of lateral-line-disease/hole-in-the head (the Wonder Shell will help). No meds - just added vitamins and Artemiss is working (Vita-Chem dose once a week -- and drops added to foods three times a week). The Silver Dollars healed completely. He did lose his Gouramis, but I expected them to die. I have enough General Cure to treat his tank one time (90 gallons) - not quite enough for the second dose. Since the fish are healing, we decided to pass on the stronger meds - especially since another water change has to be done after treatment.
I also took my 1/2 bottle of old Bio Bandage hoping my son would want it.... The old bottle works, but I bought a new bottle. My son just doesn't have the time to mess with it. I will give it to an associate at the local pet store (who comes and takes care of my fish when I am out of town).
My son will be moving in a year or so (across country).... so I will be adopting many of his smaller fish. I will help him get the larger ones to area pet stores. When he was in California, he tried to move his fish to Kentucky. He lost all but one. This time, he is taking my advice (smile). I told my husband that I will have to stop buying fish so I will have room for many of my son's... My husband just laughed - especially since I bought a Burmese Border Botia on the way home....Well, he (the botia) is just too cute! A youngster already showing the polka-dot pattern.
Cheers,
Judy D.

Maybe a larger net and a smaller net. Use the smaller net to lead the fish right into the larger net. It is kinda hard though. Looks like you will be adopting some of your fishy grand babies

Thanks Devon,
I got the Severums in the net just fine -- a good size one -- but when I lifted them out of the aquarium they really splashed. They are very strong fish. I was going to net a third one, but decided two was enough.
Yes, I will adopt most of the small fish from the planted tanks. My ten gallon will be upgraded to another 20 gallon high. That ten gallon will then become my hospital tank and I will get rid of the oldest ten gallon (my current hospital tank -- which isn't in the best shape anyways. I have resealed it twice). It would be great if my 20 gallon high could be upgraded to a 30 gallon, but the stand isn't quite big enough (besides, it is an antique East lake wash stand and 30 gallons of water might be a bit risky). At one time, I was thinking about getting a 30 gallon extra high, but I couldn't service it -- too tall.
I will only bring home the cory cats, maybe the filament bards (2 nice males) and maybe a silver dollar or two from his 90 gallon (depends on my current stock...Right now, I have no room in my 75 gallon). I raised the cory cats and silver dollars for him until they got big enough and transported them down to Kentucky (5 gallon bucket with battery air pump and plastic filter). I will need to get a new battery air pump before then. I can't use the one I have now -- it smells bad (maybe oil?). Postage to send it back for a replacement would have cost as much as a new pump. I had it too long before I tried it anyways.
I will adopt his cory cats, YoYo loaches, Peacock Gudgeons, Long finned Chocolate pleco, and some of the tetras from his two planted tanks. His angels may have to go to a local pet store. He also has a rainbow shark and a Denison barb (Roseline Shark) in his 20 gallon planted tank. Hopefully, I will have room for those in my 75 gallon. He had more Denison barbs. He moved them to his 90 gallon when they got big enough -- or so he thought. His Eclipse catfish ate them! His Eclipse catfish is huge....
Now.... If I can just resist temptation to buy more fish.....
I joked with my son's girlfriend that I could replace the living room sofa with a big aquarium.
Cheers,
Judy D.

Maybe place a towel over the fish to help it calm down?

Great! My son has lots of old towels that are fish-only towels. I will let you know how I do next time. I am sure some will still need the bath. The featherfin catfish needs the bath, but I know he will tear up the net. I almost bought some more General Cure for his fish....but I know my son wouldn't have time to do the water change after treatment. So far, the Artemiss is working to heal them - along with Vitamins. If I/we had done General Cure early on, maybe we could have saved the Gouramis... I just wasn't positive at first that it was hole-in-head/lateral-line-disease. I did more Google searches for images to confirm.
Cheers,
Judy D.

I agree there! I had to remove both my Oscars and I know they are at least 2 lbs at least! anyway I had to get my net for my pond to get them out and they made such a fuss! water all over, down my walls, all over the floor, OMG but the second time I did put a towel over and around the net as soon as I lifted them out of the water. I let them calm down first when I first caught them, and I pulled them up slowly and anytime they started fighting I stopped where i was and let them calm down, I did have help with the towel, While I slowly pulled them up the quicker they got to the surface my husband held the towel closer and closer to them, then eventually around the whole thing so water wouldn't go any where, Now I try to just get the water as low as possible take everything out and try to clean it, use a vacuum for all the mull um on the bottom of the gravel, clean that as best as I can then refill fill, takes a long time, But I try to stay on top of it, and change more frequently. because when I say these guys made a mess, THEY MADE A MESS!

Next water change I do for my son's 90 gallon, I will be giving the large Severum another Methylene Blue bath (I didn't have time this week). He isn't healing as fast as he should -- could be an age issue, too (fish is six years old). The smaller gold Severum healed completely. My son has many fish-only towels so I will have my son's girlfriend stand close by with the towel.
Thanks for the tips.

I finally broke down and purchased a couple water proof pads (one is under my H2O containment tub--no mater how hard I try, I still spill water when filling the bucket for H2O changes). I got mine (I don't remember the Brand name) from DrsFS, the only place I could find them. They come in 2 sizes and are manufactured specifically for the aquarium hobby. The only things I don't like (I only use the big one during H2O changes) is that the 1st time I used the large one I left it down for a week or so (didn't think ) and it became covered in cat hair--and dirt; also, because of the waterproof backing, it doesn't "stick" to the carpet below, so that makes it hard to vacuum...especially when you are alone and trying to vacuum and hold it down at the same time ! Now, after I've finished using it (unless I didn't spill anything ) I just hang it over the shower curtain rod to "drip dry" for a day or so before putting it away. Sure wish I had these things when I had my Oscar!

I have 2 of these pads. Used them once. They're more trouble than they are worth, IMO. Just put down some towels and when you're done, throw them in the laundry.

I'm using this pad under my tank on my furniture. I cut its edge to repeat the curve of my chest. I hope if I ever use the chest by itself, it's not going to have a mark from the tank on its top. I bought the pad in charcoal color, matching my furniture, but I remember there were blue available even cheaper.
