I just replaced the Filter Max prefilter on my HOB, because I noticed that it looked like it was starting to collapse. I rinsed the old one out (seems like it took forever before the water ran clean), and was wondering if it has any useful life left in it when it starts to collapse, or if it should just be tossed. I kept it just in case.

It was starting to collapse because the flow was pulling through a pretty clogged filter. Once the sponge fills up, it doesn't allow for much water to flow through it. Try to clean it like you did and put it back on. If the problem happens pretty quickly, then it's time to replace it. If you have a high flow HOB, I would suggest the Filter Max over the Hydro Sponge. They have a more course sponge so it doesn't get clogged so easily. Looks like that's what you have though. They are supposed to be replaced every so often...
