Has anyone grown Vallisneria plants in their aquarium and used Seachem's Excel? I recently read an article in one of my issues of Tropical Fish Hobbiest Magazine that said that Vals are extremely sensitive to the glutaraldehyde derivatives in bioavailable carbon supplements; Excel has polycycloglutaracetal. When I had Vals about 10 years ago, I never had Excel, and now that I use it I don't want to consider purchasing any more Vals if there is going to be a problem.
I've seen different varieties listed where plants have the same scientific name listed for 2 different types (common names) of Vals, and also where one common name is listed as 2 different species depending on the source of information. I've been trying to study which type of Vals would be best in a 55G tank, but with the confusion over common and scientific names it makes it hard to know what to believe about the different varieties. Petco and Petsmart rarely sell them, and when they do it just says Vallisneria, corkscrew Val or sometimes Jungle Val. The 3 places I've checked online (that I can remember) are: That Fish Place; Live Aquaria; and Arizona Aquatic Gardens.
Eventually I want to purchase some more plants, or replacement plants (once I get my new lighting system), and in the meantime I'm trying to learn what I can about the different plants--but a lot of books/web sites have incomplete and/or conflicting information. I've found a few plants that I'm really interested in, but the problem, of course, is finding them from one source. So I may have to split orders. For example, one of the swords I would like to get is the Red-spotted form of Ozelot; one source has them listed as specifically red- or green-spotted, and another just says Ozelot Sword. I would hate to order from the one with the generic title, and end up not getting what I really wanted, when some of their plants are cheaper, or have a better multiple-purchase discount--or not even carry something else I want.
Does anyone have any advice?
