Hi Devon What types of plants do you have in your tank? I attempted plants (wisteria) once and ended up with a tank full of snails! How did you decide what types of plants to buy? What type of extra chemicals do you need for your plants? Are your fish snacking on the plants? Where are your Wonder Shells? You want a larger tank? It took me years to acquire my big tank - I told my better half that when I got a big tank that I would put all my fish from the smaller tanks into it and sell the smaller tanks to help with the cost of the big tank. Well, I did get the big tank BUT My grandson and I opted to make it a cichlid tank. So my smaller tanks are still up and running with only 1 change in their inhabitants-- the Golden Gourami trio was relocated to the big tank due to their aggression toward their tank mates. I still daydream of getting an even larger tank - but do not actually plan to acquire that one until I am more knowledgable in monster fish keeping. When my grandson and I go down the street to Sea World (we have season passes) I try to think of ways I could have some of the species they have! Shhhhhhhhhh thats a secret!

When my grandson and I go down the street to Sea World (we have season passes) I try to think of ways I could have some of the species they have! Shhhhhhhhhh thats a secret! Ameenah...lol, you're funny. Well, actually since this thread, I have taken down this 20 gallon aquarium and went through the process of putting everything into a 40 gallon. Now I have more plants and fish and and eel ... I really need to do another build thread to show off my new tank. I have new LED lights on it too, so in my opinion, it's a stunning tank and cant wait for my plants to grow out more. The plants in the 20 gallon that you saw here are just java ferns. I actually got them from someone else tank, so you guessed it, they came with snails! haha. I've only really seen one and actually don't mind them. If the were to explode, I would get a little frustrated, but I haven't seen that happen yet. I know some of my fish might like a little snack, so they might prevent that? I like the little snails and shrimp, but my fish are bullies for anything that could be food. I just found that out while adding some tetras to the tank this last week. I just liked the color so much! Anyways. Since the 20 gallon, I have added a few more varieties of plants. Really all/every kind that petco had. I'm not sure of all of the names. What I did is look for plants that grew tall, medium, and low. I planted all the tall growing plants in the background of the tank and the mediums in the middle and the low in the front. They have loved the set-up I've got going for them, cause they are all sprouting new leaves! I dose SeaChem Excel (liquid carbon) daily, and SeaChem Flouish (a light fert/minerals) every couple/few days. I also have the SeaChem root tabs in all around the roots and the substrate I used, I set-up keeping the plant roots in mind. I put down a good layer of sand, on top of that, the Seachem Flourite, and some smaller peddles on top of all that. The sand will give the roots really something to anchor into. The Flourite gives all the needed minerals, plus all the fert/carbon. I'm expecting the plants to go crazy in the next couple months, then I'll back off on the ferts. The light is important too. I have LEDs that are 6500K which is pretty close to prefect for plant growth. I've almost focused more on the plants then the fish... :S. I'll put together a build thread soon and get all the names of the plants together. I really just went to petco and said, I want that one, and that one, ooh and that one... I've also added a bunch of stones my wife and kids have gathered over time that are great color and all polished. I made a path that starts in the back of the tank to the front. ok, enough words, I just have to show a picture. I'll get that together soon.

some more thoughts. If you get plants and are afraid of snails. You can do plant dips. I used hydrogen peroxide, but there are other ways too. Yes, some of my mollies eat on my plants, but it was only on one kind. They left the rest alone. It must have been something with just that plant. My pleco makes me a little nervous around the plants, but he has down pretty good not ripping them up. He just goes around eating the algae off for me I know what you mean about upgrading and not using smaller tank. I'm tempted to keep the 20 gallon and start setting up more in that one too. Time will tell. Here's a great article if plants are something you want to get into. Sometimes I think I put more effort into having plants, then just keeping fish...worth it to me. I'm a plant guy. www.americanaquariumproducts.com/AquariumPlants.html

Sorry that you lost Shakes. Thanks for sharing the pictures of your tank build and setup too. How is your other angelfish doing?
