thanks for thought...I did test ammonia / nitrate /nitrite and highrange ph with a still consistant 0,0,0,and 8.0 Yes, I saw your numbers, but I thought is was a duplicate (of the ammonia/nitrites), as a 0 nitrate reading is not normal for a freshwater aquarium, which made me question the results of this test Carl

I will retest today and see what it appears to be ...the color was a little darker yellow but not orange ...what is a good reading for nitrate ?...nitrate is the end of the ammonia cycle correct ?

I am not sure which brand kit you are using, but assuming the API or similar you are describing between 10-20 ppm which is excellent, assuming the kit is not expired. Generally under 40 ppm is reasonable and under 20 is excellent for freshwater fish Carl

I made a decision that took a lot of thought..I saw lesions along his dorsal as well as areas on his body that were very cottony looking...I really felt responsible for his well being , however the many other fish as well...2 weeks of attempting to cure him with no success and no other fish having any signs whatsoever made me decide to take him to a local fish store Im close to and they put him alone right into there hospital tank and began to do what they thought ..They have a customer who specifically keeps only large cichlids and I offered the fish to go to him.. My gh read 180 as also the kh which read almost the exact same...The ph was holding at 8 The ammonia and nitrite read 0 and the nitrate showed 5.0=10 ish....Thank you much for your sincere interest and I will try to send a tank pic to you.

Well, it very much sounds like you made the right choose. Hopefully, they will be able to give him some good care. It looks like you gh is fine. I would consider your mineral catons or KH. From Carl's chemistry articles: "More simply put; maintaining a certain KH does not guarantee a certain pH due to many other chemistry aspects. However maintaining a KH appropriate for the fish kept WILL prevent drastic pH swings!" "Depletion of Positive Ions Think of it this way; a storage battery "works" only when a positive and a negative electrode are present to maintain an electrical current. When the positive ion charged plates become exhausted, the battery is no longer any good until recharged. In a lead/acid batteries essentially lead (Pb) and lead oxide (PbO2) are changed to lead(II) sulfate (PbSO) in the discharged state (exhausted positive ions), HOWEVER the lead is still present (as with calcium in an aquarium) in a discharged state. Water changes and additional supplements are generally necessary to replenish these mineral ions (cations). Using the car battery as an example again, when re-charging, a 12 volt battery will show a charge of up to 14 volts in a 12 volt battery shortly after and at the completion of a charge, this is similar to the high GH (often over 400) with the use of many methods of adding mineral electrolytes such as Wonder Shells." I would recommend the additional of a wonder shell to your tank. Even better would be a medicated shell because of the recent sickness. www.americanaquariumproducts.com/AquariumKH.html#khThe KH and GH sections www.americanaquariumproducts.com/MedicatedWonderShell.htmlWonder Shells Keep us posted

I visited the patient at the fish store and appears to be less stressed and healing...must not have a very strong immune system...I treated 2 more days with about 40% water change and large hob filter is running again along with the wet dry and all perimeters appear quality and fish seem great !..now to keep close eye on everything as a good fish father..gathering resources with thoughts of maintenance items including medicated shells...thanks for interest and help..
