I have a long story about a futile attempt to start a new tank and fight green algae in the water (with a happy end eventually, but I had to restart the tank completely), but it's for another topic.
Here, long story short.
I have a Penguin (don't remember the model now) double cartridge/sandwich type filter in my 30G tank. The water column is about 16" tall, the intake of the filter doesn't reach the gravel for about 3,5", that is to say it's very short for this tank. For this or another reason, the filter is very ineffective.
I want to add Filter Max prefilter, but my filter intake is square.
The question is if any of the tubing adapters will fit in a Penguin filter square intake with the possibility of plugging the corners with aquarium silicone?
Another general question about prefilters. In the articles on this website I read that prefilter will collect bigger debris while keeping the filter cartridge cleaner... but I'm afraid not only bigger debris, but all dirt will be collected by prefilter. Leaving nothing except bio filtration for my Penguin (which it does badly, according to Carl's articles), so basically, my Penguin will only move water, nothing more.
It's a goldfish tank and I'm afraid the prefilter will be overwhelmed .
The Filter Max media seems finer than the media of the Penguin cartridge. I mean, logically, I would expect something with bigger holes as a prefilter (for the bigger debris), and something with the smaller holes and finer texture as a second filter. In my case it looks just opposite. So I'm confused.
Another suspicion... the Penguin cartridges are worse quality recently. The threads they are consisting of became less dense. If I rinse the cartridge and rub it during rinsing, it's so easy now to make a hole in the cartridge media.
