My youngest daughter bought one a couple weeks ago and she just loves this fish. Unfortunately, he's a cave dweller/hider, so I can't snap a pic of him. He does look very much like the picture below, however. The fish itself looks a bit like a cichlid. I was told it was is one of the smallest aquarium fish in existence. The one we have is a full-grown adult that is barely 1/2" long. The baby guppies aren't much smaller!

Yeah, I was thinking as I typed that it looks a bit like a cross between a Cichlid and a Gourami or Betta. We have it in a tank with two male Endlers and it's not any bigger than they are. He's got a lot of personality.
This is our first experiment with Endlers too. We're cross-breeding them with female guppies - we've already got 2 babies that have survived...

I don't think I have, but I must say it is a stunning fish!

I had one in my 10 gallon for a while. They are adorable, but they can be difficult. From what I read (after I bought the fish, unfortunately), they prefer live foods. I didn't have much luck getting him to accept prepared foods, and he only lived for about 6 months or so. Maybe he was eating baby shrimp during that time, I'm not sure.

I feed frozen brine shrimp quite often so I guess we'll see.
I read somewhere that bloodworms aren't good for them...

Hm, maybe that was the problem. I usually have frozen bloodworms around. Maybe it was death by bloodworm!

I breed Pure/True Endlers and the Badis is GORGEOUS!!! That is a type fish I want to have in my community tank. I have Black Bar Endlers in my 55g at work. That would be a great addition to the tank up here......well as long as they don't eat the Endler fry...lol
On a side note...please don't cross a female endler with a male guppy...that would ruin her from ever producing true endler fry and True Endlers are hard to find...My endler's have never been crossed outside their type.

We have two Endler males and are interbreeding them with female fancy Guppies. Is that an issue or is it just crossing female Endlers with male guppies?
So far I haven't seen any predation on the fry from the Badis or from the guppies for that matter.

So far I haven't seen any predation on the fry from the Badis or from the guppies for that matter. It could go either way...guppy breeders have "pure bred" lines too. You are ok with crossing a Fancy female to Ender males. Endler females are soooooo hard to find, and you pay a lot for them. I sale "virgin" females for $2 a piece and when they do start producing, it is only 2 fry. Adult producing females are $5 each, and they only produce 6 fry if your lucky. I didn't mean anything bad...I just know how hard it is to find untainted female Endlers....sry if my post was rude

No, not rude at all. I want to practice responsible fish keeping whenever possible. Very informative, thanks!

I just read and "article" last night on this fish. It was once thought to be a subspecies of the Badis, or Scarlet Badis (Badis badis), but it is actually the Scarlet Gem Dario dario. The "article" is on page 18 of the December 2006 Aquarium Fish Magazine, and is the 1st subject in the Freshwater Q & A column "Dazzle up a tank with the beautiful scarlet gem". The males have all the color, the fry are 3mm, and the fish reaches 3/4", and it comes from heavily vegetated streams in the Assam and West Bengal regions of India, with a pH of 6.4 and a dH of 6.
