I call mine little piranhas, especially when it's dinnertime. The big ones I have also remind me a bit of bulldogs. They way their gill covers kind of "hang" on the side look like the jowls or whatever on a bulldog. I never thought of that but they do look like bulldogs! Do yours line up all in a row? I catch mine doing that sometimes. One of these days I'll try to get a video of them doing it. It's so funny! Mine line up all the time. They "circle" as well.

I have 10 of these now. They're my absolute favorite fish.

Lost my first Colombian last night. Judging by the size, it was one of the oldest (somewhere around 3 years old). No outward signs of infection or other disease (in it or any of the other fish for that matter). It just expired. RIP.

Sorry to hear of the fish's passing Parker. This isn't common-place for any other type of fish I know of, but with very old guppies that are disease-free, they always seen to expire from old age overnight. R.I.P. tetra. Renee

I've had that happen with a couple of my Black Phantoms a while ago, also overnight. I'm pretty sure it was from old age, because the ones that died (at 2 totally unrelated times) were the largest and were a few years old. I don't remamber how old now, but I had had the male since he was kind of small--not as small as others I have gotten--and his fins all grew long and flowing--especially his dorsal. I named him Gramps after his fins grew so long, and because of his size. After he died, the next oldest male inherited the name.
As to size, the first few times I got any Phantoms (at Petsmart), they were all adult size, but I quit getting them there, because for a few years now they have always been in a ragged state. So I switched to getting them at Petco (a little more expensive, but better condition), where for the last few years they've always (only) had juveniles. This last time I got them I was able to pick out a couple that were males, but the first couple of times they all had the female coloration, and they changed over within around a month. I try to get an equal number of males and females, but that first time, I ended up with only one female...so I went back for a couple more.
