We gave my father-in-law's 90G tank to my brother-in-law to free up some space in the family room. While cleaning out below the stand, I found 3 cheap plants that no doubt were purchased at Wal-Mart because they matched 3 of my plants perfectly. I took the smallest of the 3 and put it with its pair to frame my cave and pillar on the righ-hand side of my tank. They are the two plants in the foreground left and right. The other two plants were the modular kind, so I took them and my two, took them all apart, and combined them back together to get a different look. When you buy them, they have 4 fronds and can be quite bushy. I reduced them to 3 fronds and used the leftovers to make them much taller. On the far left of the tank I put one VERY tall (almost touches the surface of the water) plant in the background and a shorter version in the foreground. The other two I made similar in height, but with only 3 fronds on 2 bases, they "flow" much differently than would 6 fronds on just 1 based. They are the 2-tone plants behind the African wood, to the left of the sponge filter. Those pictures also give you a good idea of just how much taller the new lift tubes are on the sponge filters. Here's a pic of the entire tank. I apologize for the quality but I think it demonstrates how far I have progressed. I can't believe how bare my tank used to be. It's a jungle now!

Wow, the tank really does look nice (although it still looked pretty nice before IMO)
Great aquascaping

Very nice. The bushiness of the plants makes the tank look really beautiful. Nice work.

Tank looks great! I think you've got one of the coolest pieces of driftwood in there. It's so interesting to look at.
How has your more "hands off" cleaning policy been working out?

It's actually been working OK. I've done a couple of water changes and rinsed out my filters but other than that, I really hadn't touched a thing until I did this. I could have probably done without this but I let it sit in the back of my head for a few weeks and finally buckled under the pressure. Provided I don't go to the LFS and find a new an interesting decoration, I think I'll be fine from here on out.

I've started bagging my own carbon (once my Aqueon filter media is completely exhausted, I'm going to start doing my own polyfiber filter pads too). The difference is pretty amazing. It changed the entire color of the tank and the lighting is now intensely white rather than dull and yellowish. Before: And after:

I put an acrylic background on today to block out the light coming in from the back (I had already fashioned some covers for the ends from cardboard). It looks great. I will try and post some pics tomorrow.

Not that your aquarium looked bad before, but this background really makes a difference. Much more full with more depth and realism. My Hats off to you Carl

gorgeous pics! I love the brightness and also how the backdrop gives such a sense of depth to your aquarium.

Thanks. I've put quite a bit of blood, sweat, and (my wife's) tears into it. I have done a good job of not having my hands in the tank all the time and other than my water changes, I'm managing to leave it alone for the most part. I'm enjoying it again and I can't believe how much different it looks now than it did. Only 16 days now until my oldest daughter gets to start this journey. My wife says I'm cruel but I've already told her she won't be getting a hood for the 10G tank for Christmas. She's mad now but I can't wait to see the look on her face when she realizes she didn't get a hood because she's getting a brand new 14G tank.
