haven't the foggiest idea! thought severums were aggressive....very beautiful fish indeed - SAs can be a bugger as far as water parameters go, but you don't need me to tell you that

actually....with a few exceptions....SA are pretty hardy fish. rams are a tough one tho. I am hoping he will be a pretty addition, and as for aggression....severums are fairly mild mannered although i am more worried for the severum from my other guys....lol

Beautiful fish Bill!
I have not kept one of these, but I have kept many Green Severums which this looks a lot alike. As you already noted, with the exception of German Rams, I have found Severums one of the easiest fish to keep. As well they are personable and not nearly as aggressive as many American Cichlids.
If you find more out, please share it with us so I/we can learn more about this specific Severum.

Beautiful fish!! Sometimes I really miss our severums that we used to have. We had a big male Gold Severum that was lord and master of his tank and was very intolerant of any other fish. Actually, he was just intolerant in general. When we would clean the tank he would dash out of his cave and nip us. Granted they don't have sharp teeth or anything but when a fish that size decides to tag you as hard and as fast as they can it's quite uncomfortable and disconcerting. What other fish are you planning on putting this guy in with? My husband built rock work caves for our severums and everybody had their own little spot that they would retreat to so I would definitely suggest that your new severum will need his own niche. By the way, my severums always loved to get shelled cooked peas, they ate them like candy. I've found that the golds have more of a tendency to have homicidal individuals than the greens but I have never kept the particular variety you are interested in. How much do they want for the male you were mentioning? I found this cool link I thought you might enjoy. www.malawicichlidhomepage.com/other/heros_rotkeil.html

if i get this one, he`ll be put in a 90 gallon with a large amphilonsi lyonsi and a very calm tilapia( can`t remember the species tho) as well as a large and medium common pleco. i have had many different fish with these guys and thgey always adapt well to new "buddies" and i expect this severum will be no exception. i have been watching this guy for years now as he was in a large display tank at my local fish store and he has been nothing but cordial to tank mates. they are asking $40 for this guy and he is showing his colors like i`ve never seen..

$40 sounds like a steal for a fish that they have had for this long! Do you have any pictures of your amphilophus lyonsi? Is it a male or female? Carl

I would buy that fish!! Full grown and you know that he's been kept under good conditions and he's well colored?! Buy, buy, buy!! If I had the tank space for that big boy and found a specimen like that I'd pick him up in heartbeat. Does he have a favorite cave in the LFS display tank? If he does you could try and mimic it in his new home.
