Any specific reason why? I'm just curious. I noticed it makes it's own salt to.. every time I change the water ( just trying to see how long it will live in freshwater) I notice all the salt from it. And believe me I have rinsed these things a hundred times already and changed the water once a week. but they keep making their own salt. I have no idea what it is either. But I have had them for over a month I guess I will just throw them away. no use for them really.

Soft wood is almost impossible to get "clean" because it soaks up so much from its environment. The fact that your pieces continue to leech salt despite the repeated rinsing would be a red flag for me.
Soft wood will decompose faster, leeching more into the water over time. The change in chemistry might be difficult to control, for one.
Also, soft woods can be an absolute resort for disease pathogens.

Ok well thank you for the info, I threw them out anyway. I really didnt have any use for them other than that. Thought it may look cool in the tank, but I don't want to hurt my fish.
