i want to share my experience although quite frustrating,in my attempt to breed angelfish.i hope someone can help me with this ;D
i started my breeding project back in september 2008.i bought 4 juveniles at first, but 3 died,so i bought another 3 until i had 8 angelfish.,then suddenly a disease struck them,at first a fellow hobbyist and i thought it was hexatimia or hole in the head disease because it had similar symptoms, they were pooping out white mucus if some kind and they were not eating.last march,i asked mr.carl what might struck my angels(mr. carl was reffered to me by mr. jon v and so is everything aquatic, thanks sir!).
after all 8 died,i began buying more angelfish which i thought can become a good breeder(talking about the strains and fins) and also just because of my bad impulse buying(i buy every new angelfish in LFS which are beautiful for me.. i then have had 24 angelfish!.all was going well, until i have to go to a trip and have to leave the feeding to my sister, and when i came back, all of my tanks have been polluted by uneaten foods, soon 15 angelfish got sick and died(again,i consulted it to mr. carl).but soon, i finally have my 1st pair, they spawned 3 times for me but they were egg eaters and i wanted to see and observe parental instincts,so i separated them and let the inferiors left in the tank to establish new dominance, soon i had 4 pairs!(i was sure they really are a pair,a male and a female)but this time, all eggs are not hatching, and a day after spawning, all eggs will turn white.i tried artificial hatching with methylene blue and still they would turn white.after 5 spawning from the 4 pairs,i still got the same results.at first our theory was the ph(my water measured 7.5),but my convicts have had several hatching of their eggs, and most angel breeders said that they are not "sensitive" and eggs will still hatch at that ph.that's when we thought that i have 4 sterile males.i read that it is a rare case and yet i have 4 of 'em!hahah!
i asked a local dealer who is also a breeder if he can sell me a male angelfish,he agreed and so i have a new pair established and yesterday they have spawned.but i saw the vent of the male that was sold to me and it looks like it is a female!,and as expected(i think i became numb of getting same results),the eggs were eaten.
it's almost over 9months now since i started this breeding attempt and still no angel fry.
i am thinking of giving it a rest, coz i don't think i will have positive result if i am frustrated.haha!but is there something i can still do?i only have 3 pairs left since 2 of the male died when our power was out, plus 8 "single" angelfish.
sorry for the long post.
