are you using tap water? is it slimy and wipes right off or dos it seem to be permeating the plastic? if it wipes off, it's either brown diatom or a sign you need to rinse your sponge filter....if it is permanently staining the plastic it could be iron rust if you are using tap water

harlequin rasboras......yes, brown algae - take a sponge and wipe it off the glass and take all your decor and rinse it in hot water - is this a fairly newly established tank?

I do use tap water I use arine buffer and prime though when I change the water brown diatom is a pain in the butt - give it time and it will go away - may even take a few months worse case scenario - did you put salt in your tank? best thing to do is keep wiping it off with a sponge and keep your decor clean - bear in mind too that algae eaters don't care for it much either so don't depend on them to do a job cleaning it up - good luck!

I had some of this in one of my smaller tanks...Got bristlenose plecos and my tank has been spic and span. It look exactly like yours, in the same place even as I have those spongefilters in there too.

They took care of mine. I also have an HOB filter and the motor is on the inside of the tank, It was covered and didn't wipe off real easy...2 days after having these guys it was the cleanest I had seen it. So, they worked for me.

I don't want to guarantee them per say it was amazing what they did for me. I hope if you try them they work as well for you. They should be fine wioth your other fish, I have some with little fry and they are fine. Maybe, someone else has more insight.

I also use plecos as my "tank cleaners" and he didn't help me at all - in fact, I have a 10 right now that "had" it until I cleaned it - had a 2" pleco in there and he did a great job until I found him dead 2 days ago - didn't want anything bigger in that tank because that's where I keep new platy fry and a large pleco swimming around can inadvertantly kill the babies by accident

The good thing with the bristlenose is they max out at 4-5" if that.

can only get common plecos here - had a little 2" pleco in there and he was great - named him "Happy" - did a bang up job for a fish so small and then died 2 weeks later - was worried a larger pleco could tail whip newborn fry - try again I guess, just kind os unfair to keep a pleco too long in a 10 and mine seem to grow very quickly - I really wish we had more than a petsmart here!

Another way to beat back brown diatome is to introduce green algae from another tank and it will out compete the brown stuff. Right now I have a small rock in my 10g that I sterilized and put in the brightest part of the tank so green algae will grow on it. Once it is nice and green I'll put it in the 38g to seed that tank with green algae and kill off the brown stuff popping up that much faster. Plus, I want to make sure I have a good algae colony going in there for when I get my new pleco.
