Well thanks for the support guys but he is going to die very soon. He is very disorientated (just like the female was) and pretty much laying on his side. I know there is nothing else I can do for him at this point.

I am so so sorry to read this as I know how much your care for your fish (as do most here) I wish there was a magic wand I could wave here, but alas I do not have one. Carl

He is dead. I just wish I knew exactly what happened in order to prevent this from happening again. Could it have been both parasites and bloat? He was a lot more swollen looking yesterday and today. Now I am going to have to try and find another male..What good are my 5 females others wise. If they were prettier that would be a different story. The hard part is these fish are hard to find. I am currently feeding the medicated food to my big tank. They don't really like it but that is all I am going to feed the next couple days.

Here is a pic of him after he died... I don't know if the sores were due to bloating because they weren't notiable earlier but the light patch of color was there and isn't normal for him. Sorry to post pics like this but thought maybe somebody could see something that would be an answer.

if you can buy salt tomorrow....i would hold off until then. as carl mentioned....table salt has iodine, which the fish needs....but it has other unwanted chemicals as well. in this case i don`t think a day will matter much.
also....i don`t feel this is bloat. i can see few signs of bloat and this fish is still holding amazing color, which is odd for a stressed and sick fish....

Those look almost like blisters in there. Keep in mind Brenda. pathogens don't stay inhabited in a body very long when it dies. When my Asian Yellow Tailed Arowana died, I considered freezing it and sending it out for testing. Magicman, when he was still on YA answering was on messanger with me that night and I took all kinds of pictures. He indicated to me when a fish dies, the parasites or pathogen doesn't stay very long in the body. I bring that up as saying if you took your pictures like almost right away, this might help figure out what it was. If it was a few hours later, this might mask what really got him. Sorry to see him go. I've had a few nice looking older adult haps slowly go on me too. Really sucks when that happens, but don't beat yourself up over it. You noticed something wrong and did what you could. Disease and me are still learning also.

The picture was taken probably an hr after he died maybe less..I didn't mess with him right away even after I thought him to be dead because I wanted to be sure. Now that weird light patch of skin was like that before he died if that helps any. This was also the side he was more swollen on.

I am sorry that he passed. Both bikeguy and Jon made good points, especially as to pathogens will "rupture" through the body wall after or even before death and this is not a good indicator of what actually caused death. I still do not feel this was bloat along with Bill (bikeguy). The progression does not fit, also it should be pointed out that bloat is a symptom more than an actual specific disease. I would still emphasize the use of salt in the tank and any future baths as this will aid in moving medications through the body and as well improve osmoregulation during times of infection. I am not saying salt should be present at all times (not that that is bad either), only that you might consider the use of salt when new fish are added or you suspect a problem. Unfortunately prevention for this problem is difficult as you have little control over the fish prior to your receiving them. I have seen this exact problem MANY times, so not to seem modest, I am only pointing this out that it is not all that uncommon, EVEN with fish purchased from normally reputable sources (although I have had sources for fish that had more problems with internal parasites, so I would purchase from them if this continued to happen). I agree with your use of medicated anti-parasite food along with your usual good aquarium care. Carl

How come I can't see any of these pictures? I get a box with an X at top left and it doesn't open? any computer wiz out there that can tell me what I need to set my comp to? I see the one after death, but not the before's. I'm sorry about your fish and I hope you CAN find another...

That's weird because usually when you can see the last one you should be able to see the other ones as well have you tried to refresh?

Often a computer will not show picture (only an "x") if it cannot load, often this happens when the computer is taking too long to load due to a slow internet connection or server problem along the way. What is your internet connection and your provider? Carl

So sorry to hear of your loss Brenda. I hope things go better for you with the rest of your fish and you. Don't give up! I know you can breed these guys! As they say, just keep swimming!
