we have a large figure 8 puffer and 2 pea puffers in with a convict, a couple yellow labs, and 3 different barbs. they get along well. it is my roomies tank....maybe i`ll do a video soon.
you are right about them being brackish....but roomie has a tank at just slightly higher salinity than cichlids likes, but less than the text book for puffers. these guys are near 2 years old and happy in their not quit salty enough home....
I'm sorry to get sidetracked on John's thread, but I think this is a great example of how you just can't tell what is or isn't going to work sometimes. My husband used to have puffers and he moved them from tank to tank because they were tearing up every other fish he put them in with. He had to put them by themselves eventually because they just wouldn't get along with any of his other fish, including convicts. He eventually traded them in because he wanted to make the tank they were in into a community tank, not possible with the homicidal puffers in there. But your roommates puffers do great and don't kill anyone! Everyone thought the Labs would do great for John because they are supposed to be really mellow cichlids, but his turn out to be aggressive. Sometimes putting fish together can just be trial and error that depends greatly with the individual personalities of the given fish.
John, I am very sorry that you have had a rotten run of luck lately with aggressive fish. I really hope that your next batch of fish work out better.
Carl suggested the rainbow fish and although I have not had mine very long and therefore can't call myself an expert about them I can say that they are very enjoyable fish. They are colorful and active, although in the tank at the store they don't look so great for several reasons, they are sold at a size where they haven't colored up yet, they are kept under not so great lights that dampen their colors, and most importantly, they are fed a crap diet that does not afford them the nutrition needed to develop their color. Now that mine have been with me for a while and are being fed better food they are growing well and beginning to color up. My only concern for your tank and rainbow fish would be how many you could keep in a 20g. I think Carl would be the best to ask about that as he has much more experience with them and a lot of the information you find about them on the net is contradictory. Anyway, I'm not trying to pressure you, just thought that you might like a little info to help in your considerations.
