thanks Brenda, my whole problem here is finding females! if I try cichlids again, they will be dimorphic in a larger tank....

I hope you can get some more fish with some color to compliment your nicely decorated aquarium John.
Do you go to an independent fish store, or a PetCo, PetsMart?

am giving the other 2 labs away - believe they're both males - they're either fighting or hiding - not what I want in my tank - 20 gallon footprint is just too small for cichlids IMO - have had nothing but bad luck w/ cichlids in general! the one I have all by himself in a community tank is truly the most beautiful I have ever seen and seems quite happy where he is so I'll keep him - don't know what to do about my tank now - all we have is Petsmart and the not-so-local fish lady that buys my platys but after my experience w/ the rams thru her, I'm discouraged, disapponted and DONE!

look on the bright side....ya get to try something new....i think petsmart occasionally get mudskippers....don`t know much about them except they are fun to watch....also maybe some pea puffers or figure 8 puffers....a lil tuff to care for but are a blast to watch cause they look like carachatures...

If you have puffers it has to be puffers only, they are notorious for eating the fins off of other fish. You wouldn't think they'd be able to catch any other fish, I guess they sneak up on them while they're sleeping. Plus, most puffers need brackish water.
20g is a great size for a gourami tank and Petsmart carries a variety of colors and they will like the caves as well. Just a thought.

we have a large figure 8 puffer and 2 pea puffers in with a convict, a couple yellow labs, and 3 different barbs. they get along well. it is my roomies tank....maybe i`ll do a video soon.
you are right about them being brackish....but roomie has a tank at just slightly higher salinity than cichlids likes, but less than the text book for puffers. these guys are near 2 years old and happy in their not quit salty enough home....

John, I certainly understand about the Rams, but the lady at the local store that sold them to you may also have been sold poor quality fish, I know I have received bad shipments myself over the years that appeared "good" and did well in quarantine, only to show problems a few weeks later (including at my customers). I certainly did not use suppliers that this was a regular problem as some were often of low standards in their practices of receiving fish and how they had them shipped to them and from their source. In fact Betachris' note of the LA Fish Guys videos makes me think of one of the suppliers this guy (in the LA Fish Guys video) goes to (including in one of his videos) that is KNOWN by most who care to only sell good marine fish as a place to AVOID purchasing from if you give a damn about your customers fish lasting for a while.
I think Gouramis, rainbows, rasboras, many tetras, the many colorful Platys, and Swords can do well in there. Although not generally a fan of PetsMart, I think a lot of stores can be good or bad depending on the care individual employees give (this even goes for Walmart IMO)
