my Dad always said I was born 100 years too late That's funny, I always say that about my husband! He's a big burly thing, 6'2" and well over 200lb. He would have made an excellent frontiersman. I bet you would have, too. I used to have the powder blue gouramis and they really are gorgeous. It's great that you've such enjoyable contrast in there now. I'm 5'8" and weigh 125 lbs ( wieght loss due to the bum liver)but am tough as nails and strong as an ox! and a good hunter and am resourceful too - I never quit til I get it done and done right! - makes me happy

Awesome pics John! I have always loved Powder Blue Dwarf Gouramis, and in your aquarium he really stands out! Another reason we are twins form different parents (this too is actually a quote from you John/murdock), my height and weight are EXACTLY the same (different reasons though) Carl

How big will the Yellow Labs get as adults? Or are they already done growing? Just curious, they're so pretty!

so much for harmony! came home from my walk yesterday and missed the war that went on in my absence - came home to 2 dead torn apart fish and another (one of the new powder blue gouramis) w/ fins just ripped apart - gravel under caves was all dug up and rocks moved - think the larger male lab is sexually frustrated or becoming territorial - he's gonna find himself in a new tank soon - a septic tank!

Oh no! That's terrible! That male seems to be murderous. What were the other fish that were killed?

I'm so sorry to hear that John. That really sucks. I hope you can get that male yellow lab under control. Do you have another tank you can put him alone in perhaps? I hope things get better.

I already moved 1 troublemaker out and converted my SA to African to do this.....I thought labs were supposed to be mellow, which is why I went this route and enlarged the footprint - this one is gonna have my footprint on it soon and it's new tank like I said will be the septic tank!

I understand. Pearl gouramis are supposed to be very chill but I had one that tried to kill everything in the tank. I took him and traded him in for a blue. Too bad you only have Petsmart where you are. If you had a LFS that was a local business you could trade him in. It's astounding that he killed all those fish and wounded another. He's like the Charles Manson of African cichlids. Isn't this the same one you took out of the other tank because he was beating up the girls?

no, this is the one that was being beat up by a different one that I isolated - now he has become "king" - I don't know if there are any "girls" - am just sick about this and am going to do something different w/ the tank, mainly getting rid of the labs

this sux john....but for the dithers in particular couldnt be caught by a yellow lab.....or at least extremely unlikely. I think the lab may have a partner in crime....have you seen any aggression from any of the other dithers at all? As you know....dithers are often used in cichlid tanks to get the cichlids moving and active but to not be caught. This is not to say it cant happen, as i have seen it before.....just hardly ever....

my dithers are small - the chunks of flesh missing were not made by small mouths nor were the large sections of missing finnage - I think he was pissed off that all his attempts to breed what may or may not be a female were in vain - she has not come out of the cave for 2 days - I rebuilt after it was violated - when he couldn't get to "her" he terrorized everything in the tank - unfortunately the larger dithers made larger targets and the small ones that got whacked were weakened enough not to be able to swim away as fast - it - "she" is not holding, just terrified - I am convinced they are all males and I have no more room or patience to let a hobby I enjoy be compromised by aggression and death - was wondering about the possibility of an unknown cross as this is bizarre behaviour for a lab from all I have learned about them - either way, they're gone tomorrow

Sorry about being so late to this thread John (I had a three our meeting with "Officials" for my daughter and how they mishandled our family situation and what little time I had yesterday was wasted on thread where the person was not interested in what I had to say).
Anyway, It is possible that this lab has some other genes from another fish, but in looking at your pictures, he looks quite pure to me. However (& this is just my experience, not a fact), I have seen Yellow Labs (or Electric Yellows as I have known them for years) do this on MANY occasions. I know many here and elsewhere have stated that they are mellow, & I too have observed this, but I also have seen many of them go on murder sprees, ESPECIALLY when Gouramis are present (& why this is, I do not know).
Personally I find the Dwarf Gouramis more compatible as long as there is only one male or more than 3-4 male dwarf gouramis
I think that removing the Yellow Lab at least for now to see if you can bring peace to your aquarium (& yourself) is a good step to take.
Please keep in mind that this is just an opinion of mine, as this is one of those things that can go different ways for different aquarists.
Carl

That sucks John…Yellow labs can be very mellow but you can always get that “bad guy”…Maybe if you want to do labs just do females…Females seem to be less aggressive then males and with the labs they still have the color. Or maybe you could try Acei? Others here may have had different experiences but in my time of keeping them the Acei seem way more mellow then the labs and they are pretty…Purple with yellow fins. There are also some smaller peacocks out there that get the same size as labs and peacocks “for the most part” are even more mellow and VERY colorful.
