Oh Jon, that first one isn't a front...They tend to call it a poor mans front and it only gets to 5" or so.
As Jon mentioned it is best to pick males that look totally different. I did my tank with only males for a while and they were actually pretty mellow without any women to fight over. Even now with males and females everyone is pretty mellow when not in breeding mode. What I would do if you are going to go with like a yellow lab and an acei...get a good spirulina flake they will both do awesome on this and just supplement every other day with an african cichlid designed pellet.

thanks brenda. ill definately get the cichlid pellets. my oscar used to eat alot of them so im familiar with that hopefully these guyz arent as big of pigs as the oscar was tho lol.
had the oscar for 7 years and he got about 16 and half inches in a regular 30 gallon with a 16 inch pleco. i think the pleco finally killed the oscar for more room to grow in the end. but few months after that the pleco died aswell both were almost 3 pounds when i weighd them after they died.
sorry for sidetracking but theres no problems with the lab and the acei?

i'm sorry, but i doubt very much that the pleco killed your oscar i more likely think that they died because they where stunted

possibly but i have witnessed a bunch of brawls in that tank. where the oscar would nip at the plecos fins and then the pleco would charge and try to stap the oscar with its fins to get the oscar of his back. there was alot of damage on the oscars scales when i removed him and also my pleco would always try to eat the slimecoat off the oscars sides which i think also didnt help the situation.

lol i know i know. it was my sisters tank about 3 years ago when we were living with my parents i kept telling her she needs to upgrade to a bigger tank or give the pleco back to the pet store for a smaller one but she insisted on letting nature take its course.
i only watched these fish grow from about an inch and half all the way up to death cuz my drumset was about 5 feet away from the tank.

I agree w/ you on that Eve - way too small a tank for fish that size - I have seen oscars and plecos battle for territory before - doesn't matter what kind of fish really - they'll either fight for space or stunt, both resulting in unhappy, unhealthy fish or death

im actually concerned with that same problem with a buddy of mines tank his oscar is still small at the moment but his pleco is pretty big i havent said anything to him yet but im really considering telling him to trade his pleco in for a smaller one.

how about telling him to get a bigger tank 50+ gallons at the bare minimum, once they grow a 75 is just big enough for one single oscar with a pleco

I gave my "prize" pleco to someone w/ a 125 rather than keep him where I couldn't provide space

i dont talk to him regularly but i do recall last week when we were drinking at his place he was talking about getting another tank in his room rather then the living room he may be planning to get a bigger tank already. ill definately ask him next time i see him what his plans are.
