pretty neat IMO it's just pretty frustrating that none of them have caught on to just rinsing and replacing the carbon yet it's still about making money, they obivously have realized the stress an exchanged cartridge will give the fish

Yeah I know what you mean. I don't replace my cartridge until it starts to fall apart.
I have one of the older model Whisper filters and it has room for a floss cartridge with the carbon. A guy at the lfs recommended I get this little extra thin spongy thing for it to slip in front of the cartridge so that you don't lose all the bacteria when you change it. The only thing is that it's really hard to fit the cartridge in there sometimes, plus cramming the extra sponge in.
At least this new filter has those extra "scrubby" things that will help with the bacteria when you do a cartridge change. Not sure if they really have much use or if they're just a gimmicky thing though.

couldn't agree w/ you more on that one! trouble is, they don't make the mesh container that holds the charcoal strong enough to withstand more than a couple of good rinsings without falling apart

I have seen these in my business trips to LA (which is where I am now). Aqueon makes one as well that is of the exact same design with the motor inside the tank which is both a good and bad idea. Good for ease of start up. Bad in that the motors have been known to run dry in early tests resulting in the impeller freezing irreparably to the impeller well. There are many versions of bacterial scrubbers, with the plastic grids being the most popular of late (this includes the Via Aqua HOB Filter As well). Personally I prefer to place a nylon bag with volcanic rock in this space as this is a vastly better bio filter medium including for de-nitrification.
