i would wait for at least a week get you water tested at the petstore, which is free and then go from there take a clean cup (make sure no soap or dishwash residue is in there) which you can close or a ziplog bag, fill in some water from your tank and ask them to test it for you write down what the results are and let us know here ammonia pH nitrite nitrAte kH Gh most important thing with cycling a tank is patience

went to the petsmart and got my water tested ok all my water levels are normal in both tanks. the 10 gallon tank was a lil bit high on the nitrite from over feeding and over stock.
i baught multi test strips for 15 bucks.
No3- 0 No2- 0 pH- 8.5 KH- off the chart guessing since highest readon on strip was 240 and dark green a blue color would be 300-350 range GH- 180
baught an amonia test kit. i tested the amonia in the 28 gallon tank and followed instructions. the final result was .25
when should i test it again and is this normal?

that's perfect that you have already an ammonia reading on the 28 gallon tank which means your tank started cycling already i would test again in 2-3 days on the 28 and see where it goes from there
as for the 10 gallon nitrites or nitrAtes? that's a big difference there and if either one what is the reading on it

wow, you got quite high pH
can you please test your source water for your tanks? so we have a comparison to it
you mentioned high nitrites (no2) in your 10 gallon how high?

ok, then what i expected kinda happened due to replacing your filter media in the 10 gallon, it's going through a mini cycle, which should be done in a few days just watch your fish closely and do water changes as needed so if you see that they're stressed do a water change of 25-50% yes, if you're using tapwater to fill your tanks, that's what you want to test

i use distilled water with my 10 gallon tank cuz its inexpensive to get 3 gallons of distilled water. but on the 28 i use tapwater and the peoria water is a pH of 8.6 according to what the people at petco and petsmart have told me i always ask what the tanks pH level is when purchasing a fish.

wow, i'm surprised the cory's are doing well in such a high pH, i guess they must have been raised in that high pH then anyway, are you aware that you have the perfect pH to keep cichlids? at least for some of them just a hint if you ever want them

actually your 28 would be perfect for either species 1 male and 3-4 females wouldn't be a problem at all

species such as what? ive also liked cichlids but they get a bad rep about being agressive with any other type of fish except cichlids

lol. tempting but ive already put about 170 bucks on equiptment, fish, supplies and food in this month alone and still not very close to being ready to just sit back and enjoy the hard work and money spent. but i think after i get my tank finally cycled and levels all nice im going to be able to just let my guppies do there nasty business in the 10 gallon and leave the 28 gallon be except for routine weekly maintence and then collect up the fry and continue and it should all come back to me in a years time.
