I've finally got some good pictures of my male platy that I bought this summer. I found him all by himself in a tetra tank and he was so teeny they only charged me 18 cents for him. I bought him thinking he might turn out to be a blue platy, but he's not. I do think he's gorgeous though. I've never seen a platy with his coloration before, not that I'm terribly knowledgeable. I thought everyone might be interested to see how he turned out now that he's grown up. In fact, I think he's going to be a daddy very soon!!! I've got some nice pics of some of my other 30 gallon fish too. Celebes Rainbows My scissortail, SAE, Cherry Barb, tetra, and some more rainbows

"Chica" from the older thread is actually the pink male in the above platy pictures Renee. When I first bought the fish, we all thought it was a girl. He fooled us!
I figured he must be a mutt of some sort. I was hoping for more blue, but he's still pretty, I think.
The yellow mickey mouse is the one that I think is pregnant. They should certainly be some interesting looking fry! I may have to get one or two more females. She's the only one I have and the male follows her around like a stalker. I don't want her too get too stressed out by him.

great pictures
as for the male, for all you know, it could be a crossbreed with a swordtail
as for the female, she definitely looks pregnant

if a platy crossbreeds w/ a swordtail, I believe that makes it a "rainbow" platy which to the best of my knowledge are sterile....

Very nice pics Stephanie I like you plants too, as I always admire a healthy growth of plans too. I want to be sure I understand the platy you are referring to is the platy to the left in the top picture? I do find the iridescence of this guy really nice. I agree with you John as to Platys, and as well Swords and other livebearers, although many look on these fish as more "basic", I find them very beautiful and satisfying fish to look at. Carl

Thanks for the kind words everyone! My plants have been doing great. In fact, I have been considering taking out the big sandstone soon since the vals have been growing so well. But then I really like that rock, so I may keep it... I'm too wishy-washy! Yes Carl, the platy on the left is the one I've been referring to. Sorry to be so confusing! He's super iridescent, which is exactly why it's taken so long to get a good picture of him. He always reflects the flash!

if a platy crossbreeds w/ a swordtail, I believe that makes it a "rainbow" platy which to the best of my knowledge are sterile.... Is it even possible for a platy and a swordtail to interbreed? I have never in my life seen a platy with a sword tail. Plumetail platies, yes, but a swordtailed platy, no. I am not that into livebearers, but that would be a desireable fish, IMHO. John

the result looks like a platy w/ a gorgeous mutitude of colors - they are genetically manmade from what I have read, but they do exist - have seen them for sale on some of the more elaboate fish sale sites, but not lately

I'm not sure 8. I got a swordtail guppy out of 2 parents who weren't swordtails. You may find one or one may even come out of a batch your raise if you breed them but I'm not toatlly sure. I was dealing with purely guppies. But if you find someone who's breeding platies for swordtails, you'll probably find what you're looking for.
