I noticed during my extensive work yesterday that my glo-lite tetras were schooling tightly during the time that I took all of the ornaments out of my tank. I'm guessing this is a defense mechanism, given that they're the smallest fish in the tank and there was nowhere to hide from the large mollies. It got me to think, though - how crowded is too crowded? Or is it just a question of personal taste? Here's a couple of pics of my tank as it is right now:

you are right about the schooling....but this is under stress from your hand being in the tank. in a school seldom half perish from predation. in numbers there is no target fish. btw....if anything....you are to sparce in your tank. i recomend creating some caves if you can....

The one cave I have is huge length and width-wise. Given that my 55G tank is much taller than it is deep, I think my best choice would be to get more tall, narrow ornaments that utilize the space better.

maybe get some slate or something and create small caves.....schoolers like lil spaces where a predator cant fit into....

I have black phantom tetras that are very nippy. I have a ton of plants in their tank. Adding more plants or ornaments will help reduce aggression. However, my fish are the same way. They school when I take everything out and clean the tank. They aren't used to everything taken out and a huge hand and siphon cleaning the tank.

OK, I made some fairly significant changes today. See what you think.

Unfotunately, I haven't yet found the right cave ornament to replace the short wide one on the right.
I want to find something tall and slender, like the one on the left, only I would like to have it honeycombed with little caves. I haven't found anything close yet.

It was painful getting there - I really stress over placement of stuff (OCD!). It often takes me 3-4 hours to do water changes because of it. I spent half the day yesterday trying to get everything right.
I'm really going to have to force myself to not worry about it when I vacuum the next time so as not to wreck everything...

It looks really great. I love the wood. I love it when fish react to things we do like that. It makes all your work worth it!
