Standard goldfish can get quite big - alot of fish in general get as big as they can given the size of the container they live in.
A North American channel catfish in a 25G tank won't get much bigger than a foot, but in a 10-mile long lake, it could get to 50lbs or more.
Also, goldfish species are pretty varied. "Goldfish" is a pretty generic term. I have Japanese koi carp in the outside 1000G pond - 3 of them weigh over 6 pounds.

As parker stated Goldfish can get quite large, with some of my client's pond specimens reaching at least 18 inches.
However none were even close to this size.
I am skeptical of this article on two levels:
(1)This is not a common goldfish as the article misidentifies, rather some sort of carp (yes I know goldfish are in the carp family, but looking at the head, this is clearly not a common goldfish)
(2) Since the article is already misidentifying a fish that is clearly not a true goldfish, it makes me skeptical whether this picture is even real. This might simply be a photoshop picture.

I looked at the site you posted a link to and I am also skeptical.
The vibrant orange color of the fish doesn't seem to fit in with the lighting in the background. Also, the man has his arms positioned in a way as if he is holding another type of object. In my opinion (though I am not entirely sure), I think this image was probably Photoshoped.

Ok, there's something I hadn't considered - how he's holding the fish. I knew what picture goldies was referencing since I have seen it several times in the past, but this made me go back and look at it again. I've caught a few 30-pound fish myself and his left hand isn't hooking the mouth, a gill, or anything else that would keep the fish from thrashing wildly. He's holding it like you would hold an inanimate object, not a fish. However, I've never caught a 30-pound carp before so I Googled 30-pound carp and immediately found: All of those photos came from this site: www.lesbeauxlacs.net. There are literally hundreds of photos there of guys catching large lake carp and holding them EXACTLY the same way as the giant goldfish guy. Now here's the kicker - Lesbeaux Lacs looks French, doesn't it? That's because IT IS. It's in the Yonnes Valley in the Burgundy region of central France. Further Google searches suggest to me that: 1) Carp fishing is WAY POPULAR in France. There's dozens of websites dedicated to carp fishing trips and where to take them. 2) Lesbeaux Lacs is somewhat famous in this regard: The lake holds about 160 carp with 95% being between 30 and 70 pounds (14-32kg). More than 35 DIFFERENT 50's and SEVENTEEN DIFFERENT 60's, including four different 70's have been caught in the last two years. The majority of stock are very young with many fish growing up to an incredible 10 pounds per year! The current lake record, stands at 71.8. There is a small head of catfish and the average size is about 50lbs with a sprinkling of 100lb plus fish, including a 180-pounder landed by Michael Scott www.carpview.com/french-carp-lakes/499The only thing left unexplained is the color of the fish. Several of the articles say that the guy who caught it said it was a Japanese koi carp. That would explain the color but not the shape and size. The fish looks pretty much just like the carp in the pictures I pasted above.

Great research parker, thanks for the information/education This was what I thought, but I guess these fish/carp were dead for some time and did not require being held in a more restraining method. The one aspect of this story that remains sensational journalism IMO is the head line; "Biggest Gold Fish Found in France". This fish is clearly not a goldfish (in the strict definition since), I think this article was meant to grab the attention of those who have kept goldfish over the years, often won at carnivals. Carl

I've held my share of flathead catfish weighing 30 pounds or more. Holding them like that is a good way to end up with bruises all over your chest.

HAHA! That picture is so funny. I think it's totally fake. Comparing to the more realistic looking pictures of 30 pound fish, the "goldfish" looks like it would be heavier than 30 pounds.
Remember the pictures of the big koi I posted from my trip to Vegas? Those koi were pretty old. Even if that was a koi, how old would it have be to reach that size? Haha

You can never really know unless you see for yourself. With stuff like this, you just have to evaluate the picture and decided for yourself I suppose. As Carl noted, those are pictures of carp, not goldfish. And they do grow that large/heavy (these seem like some pretty fat ones as well).

We have some big carp around here - I've seen some in excess of 60 pounds. But they look like this:

Well, I have never seen a goldfish grow that big but I know wild carp and koi grow this large. Not that far from where I live, there are some carp in a lake over 2 feet long. Carp and koi are closely related to goldfish fyi.
You'd need VERY big tank to have a fish such as this.
